Well, I got out and shot both Saturday and Sunday. It was really nice out here in Northern Va, and winds were pretty low where we shoot. I had a bunch of different loads I wanted to try. Plus, I have saved up a bunch milkjugs in order to capture one of the Speer 275gr bullets from my 338 Win Mag. I ended up lining up 9 jugs at 25 yards. The bullets busted through 8 jugs and pierced the 9th. The final bullet weight is 150gr's recovered. There were pieces and parts of jacket and lead in a few of the other jugs, but overall, I think the bullet looks pretty good.

I did some shooting with my 270WSM also. As always, that rifle shot everything into sub inch groups. I really wanted to get a good load for the 150gr PT, so I loaded 63 (3010FPS) - 64gr (3087FPS) of RL22 and got less than inch groups with both loads. I also loaded some IMR7828 and 63.5gr I got 3050 and a very nice group. Here are some of the 270WSM targets. I use a few rifles on one target sometimes, so hopefully the picture turned out well. I tried to circle the two 270WSM groups. The Partition is very fast and accurate out of my 270WSM. I was pretty happy with them. Accuracy is excellent, and they are fast.

I also brought out some 250gr Speers, loaded over AA2520, and got excellent speed out of my 358 Win, but the accuracy was about 2" or so on average. I loaded 47-47.5-48gr and got 2300, 2350, and 2380 out of 250's. It would be a bear thumper up close, but I think I am back to 225's with the 358 Win.

Next, I moved back to 200. I wanted to check a few of my loads out at 200, and first up was my Whelen. I have the 250gr Speers loaded over 59gr of RL15. Out of the 24" barrel they are coming out at about 2575. They are really accurate for that big bullet, and here is my first group at 200. I was fairly pleased with that grouping.

Here is my best group of the day. It is my 270WSM, 150gr BT and 66gr RL22, it comes out of the muzzle at 3080. It is a sweet shooting load. This group was shot at 200 yards, and there is a glare on the calipers, but it says .910". Overall, the 270WSM is just clicking with RL22 and Noslers.

Here is a picture of the Whelen at 300 yards. Now, the rifle is 3" high at 100 and about 9" low at 300, but the grouping is there. It works out to be about 2ft low at 400, which is still manageable on elk size game.

The 270WSM shot very well at 300 also. Keeping the 150gr BT's under 2" for the most part. I started getting a little sore while switching between the Whelen, 308W, 358W, 338WM, 270WSM, and my boys 243.

I did have a few more loads with Partitions for my boys rifle, and 45.5gr of RL22 and a 100gr PT got me about 2900FPS out of his 20" barrel, but accuracy was a little off. Kind of in the FAT Inch range. Plenty good for deer for him, just not what I was expecting. I also loaded some 95gr BT's over IMR7828 and got a few nice groups, but the speed was kind of slow. I may try kicking them up a little and see what comes out. Here is the best group with the BT's and IMR7828 at 2720.

Overall, it was a great two days, and now I am really able to get out and shoot longer distances, rather than banging away at the bench. Scotty

Scotty,

Some really fine groups there. Each of the loads certainly shows potential. You have to imagine that the 275 grain 338 slugs will punch hard when they are used on game. And the 270 WSM with the 150 grain pills will deliver a great blow. Good show.

Scotty,

Looks like you had a great day at the range. 9 jugs of water with the 275 gr Speer is impressive!
Nice shooting with the 35 Whelen! Sub MOA at 300 yds is awesome and it will carry the goods on elk to 400 yds.

I had really good luck with the 270WSM, 35 Whelen and 338. They all shot really well. I loaded some 165gr Interbonds in my wifes 308. Those shot pretty well at 45.5gr of Varget. I got about 2750 out of them. I am still messing with the 180gr BT's though. They are getting about 2650 and good accuracy. I think they will get better once I load a full batch with the new Forster sizing die. It might narrow down my consistency issues.

I do like shooting at 200 and 300 a lot more though. You can really see what your loads are doing and you have to be on it in order to see decent groups. I am very happy with the Whelen though. It is shooting very well and should make an excellent elk-bear rifle for anything under 400. Next up is a load for the 358 with 225's and a less expensice load for my 338 so I can practice with it, without breaking the bank. Scotty

Looks like some mighty fine range time. I'm particularly impressed with that 275 grain .338 bullet... Wow! I think the elk are already trembling!

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. I had a good time. My son, and hunting partner got a bunch of trigger time also. It was a good time by all. Scotty
