Range report -Old school 3030Win

Son called Wednesday and says, need a doe patrol rifle for first timer.. what’cha got?
3030, 243, 270, 3006.

So made some 15 loads for 3030 using Sierra Pro Hunter Flat nose 150’s.
Varget 34.0 grains
GM210M
Starline Brass
Mandrel sized necks to .307
Used dry lube on necks and bullets during seating (Redding Die)
OAL set to 2.595” (yes, cycles nicely in my 336xlr)
Got the Garmin out.

2327fps
2327fps.
ES 3
SD 1.6
Made a small adjustment on scope to compensate for the lean left. I think she’s going on doe patrol on Sunday!

243 was loaded with 45 grain of StaBALL 6.5
Averaged 3191 sd 23.
It’s less than MOD(Minute of Doe)

3006 is a 2770 fps SPH 180 RN
2784 sd 11.

Bang on at 100

I didn’t take 270 out.
If I did, 130 NBT over H4831 at about 3000.

Yes, I’ve had good success with it.
I double clutch the seating, so raise the ram just until the bullet engages the neck, lower it, rotate the case, then finish the stroke.
Concentricity is typically 0.0015 or less. Before using dry line on both neck and bullet, depending on a variety of things… concentricity was from 0.003-0.005.
I can usually get most powders and bullets working well, ie ES under 20 and SD’s under 10. 3 is a pretty small sample, I’m using the imperial dry lube and applicator beads. I see there are others out there that work

Interesting, I've never seen the "double clutch" on seating. I do a two count, lift, rotate and a second two count with the collet die. I saw Eric Cortina in a video say he'd take neck tension over a 0.1 of a grain.

So got a couple texts from doe patrol.
Sierra Pro Hunter 150’s in the 3030 at 2325fps, folded 2/2 at 100 yards. My son Took the second, gf took the first.

Along that line, I’ve pulled the sizing button off most my f/l sizing dies and size the necks using a mandrel die. It seems to help me get more consistent necks.

I use Redding Body dies to bump and a mandrel die for the necks. In my opinion your methad is same same. Happy reloading Sir!
*I have an old 30-30 or two.

+1 , I think the mandrel is the way to go .

So first soybean muncher, took the hole through both legs and lungs at about 100 and folded.
Second soybean muncher took a double lung/heart at 150yards. Clean pass through and folded. Chris was completely impressed with the performance of the 3030 with the 150 flat nose SPH. He used a 5” hold high to compensate for then extra drop vs the 100 zero. Told him 8.5-9” at 200.
Pictures he sent were hanging and skinned so won’t post those.
I think they are going again on Friday.

Fake News! This is impossible with a non-magnum non-poly tipped bullet!!! It should have just bounced right off...Hahaha That's great, congrats! solidifies me carrying a lever gun for a hunt or 2 this season.

This one. It’s a 22” 336XLR.
Funny story.

Heard a story about a guy who didn’t want to talk to his wife about buying another rifle.
So he went to the he gun store, picked one out and worked out a lay away deal. So every day, he’d skip lunch and save his lunch money… long time passes and he eventually pays it off. To get it in the house, he conspires with the gun shop.
Monday while he’s at work….
The gun store calls his house. Wife answers the phone. Hi, does so an so live here?
Yes.
Can I speak with him?
no he is at work.
Can you have him call us at “local” gun store? He won the Raffle and his rifle is ready to pick up.

His wife is excited her husband is a winner and take him to the gun store the next day to pick up his prize and pick out a really nice scope for his free rifle.
Told my wife the story and told her I’d never to that to her.

3 months later, my raffle ticket gets drawn and I get the Marlin 336XLR in stainless with grey laminate 22” barrel….I got the look. Told her I bought $100 in raffle tickets and put them in the jars of the rifles I was Interested in. Everytime I get a gun out, is that the one you “won”? Air quotes..


Guys, dont be an idiot like me. don’t tell your wives that story. I was an idiot the day I told her… on the plus side.. It was like a guarantee I’d win one in The near future!
