Got back from the holiday trip yesterday and had a few min this afternoon to recheck the base setting on my 3.5X10 Leupy on my 300 Win Mag. After my last two range sessions, I had pulled off the turret and added two clicks to the base elevation. I wanted to recheck that at 320 yards. If you remember from last time the groups at 320 were 1 1/2 low and 8 inches low at 650. So today I shot a three shot group, prone, using the bipod no bags just elbows. I was very happy with the group and now the impact point is about 1 1/2 inch high at 320. Next step is to reshoot at 650 and 100 yards to again check where we are. Load was my standard and info is written on the targets.

Elk beware! You've got that load dialed in, Bill. Great shooting.

Very nice. Looks like the load is doing what you want her to do.

WOW! Bill, dang it! Who says you old goats can't shoot! Great shooting buddy. Seems like your dialed now! Son of a gun. That is a bull on the deck if I ever saw one! I know many of the folks here haven't seen that old Winchester, but if they saw the rifle that I saw, they would be impressed.

Gang, Bill's old M70 is worn of blueing and probably the 3rd coat of paint around the belly of it, from carrying and hunting. If there was ever a 300 magnum I wished I could talk to, that would be the one. Thankfully I still have the old goat! I guess old age is fended off a little from a steady diet of Noslers (at least for the rifle)!

For those of you who don't know this lovely piece of Winchester engineering, was purchased in 1970, the spring after I got out of the Army. Its a push feed, 1966 Mod 70. It currently hosts its third stock (a Chet Brown), bought in 88 I believe. The original stock split in two longwise, the second one wore out. This stock has been painted three times. The rifle has been blued twice, has a basix trigger (i got tired of filing on the original) and is wearing its third scope. As you can see its a sub MOA rifle, as it was from day one. Original purchase price was $160 dollars. Its been hunted every year that I have owned it for at least 3 weeks a year. The load was developed in the summer of 1970 and has never been changed. One of Winchesters best.

Bill,

Very nice! A real work horse rifle.

Elkman, there are certain things in life that just feel right and you have it with that 300.
You and the rifle are one when it comes fall time :)

Blessings,
Dan

That is some fine shooting! I love to hear old stories from my grandpa about his Rem 721 270 Win. I never get tired of hearing them, even for the 6th or 7th time. Sure hope your passing some of those stories along as well. I Have his rifle now, and am thinking about taking it out this season just so a little piece of him can go with me.

Can't wait to see how she does for you at 600 yards.

I hear your on those push feed M70s. I was browsing the guns at my loal Walmart one day and they had a push feed M70 in .300 Win. Mag. with a 3x9 Simmons scope and blind magazinne synthetic stock for $350 and change. Guess it's been sitting there as they had it marked down to $249.99 plus tax so I said what the hell and bought it. As near as I can tell, that stock just might be a McMillam  All I will say is that .300 Win. Mag. will keep three 200 gr. Speer Hot-Cores into .75" and the .200 gr. Nosler Partition in .80" when I do my part. The Simmons scope is long gone and a 3x9 Leupold is what it wears now. The recoil pad that as on that stock was as hard as he rock of Gibralter but there's a Decelerator on it now. It's one of the very few that I would keep come hell or high water.
