Read JD's reply earlier to rebarreling a 7mm Mag to 7 STW. Got me thinking about rechambering a barrel to 250 Savage. If you can set back a berrel and rechamber for 100 bucks what cal/ would you have to start w/ ? Is the 25-06 chamber to large in diameter. The 250 case may be to small. Also, the other possibility in a "big" .25 would be a a necked down 270 WSM. Could a guy rechamber a 25-06 for this round? I know where there is a 25WSSM in winchester compact. Nice rifle but I see no point in the WSSM chambering when there's a 25-06 available. Jus idle thoughts. Trying to fing a cheap way to build a 250 Savage. CL

You are asking about faster rounds, but thenasking about 250Sav.???

Why not just do a 25-06AI & be done with it.

CL,

You will be limited to action length, short action for the shorter calibers and a long/mag action could be for anything.
You can rechamber a standard caliber to a magnum but it is going to cost more money. The bolt face will hae to be opened up and the rails opened up to accommodate the larger case.

What I was saying about the 7mm Rem Mag to the 7mm STW, the remington action and magazine will fit the STW case, which is .350" longer. No other modifications are needed other than rechambering.

Hope this helps you out.

Cloverleaf, Bolt face and how much shank you have will be factors to consider with any rechamber. To go to the 257WSM, bolt face redo, magazine problems and the current thickness/length of the chamber shank.Rick.

Cloverleaf - What kind of action does your rifle have? Rem? Win? Savage?

Long or short?

The .257 Roberts is a fine cartridge, and the "Improved" version of it generates muzzle velocity very close to the .25-06. The .25-06 will only work in a long action.

Stuff like the WSM cases require a larger bolt face, and sometimes other modifications to the action to let them feed from the magazine since they're pretty "fat." This can be done - Dad has a .257 Weatherby mag that was built on an old Mauser action. Originally a 7x57 I believe, then a .257 Roberts and now it's a .257 Weatherby magnum. This was done however in the days before magnum boltface actions were common.

Thanks for the replys guys- I was thinking "out loud" but not thinkineg well. I get it. Sorry for wasting the space. CL

Lots of us "gun nuts" try to think of various combinations we could build! Not a waste at all!

I think any short-action rifle currently chambered in one of the many .473" head dia cases (.308, .243 etc) would make a dandy .250 Savage! All it would take is a simple re-barrel job.

Regards, Guy

I don't think it would pay to rebarrel a factory barrel. If you are going to spend the money on having smith work done, then spend a couple hundred more and get a quality barrel.
