Young John drew a Very Late Season elk tag. Sadly, our planned week-long trip got whittled down to two days by our mutually conflicting schedules. So, we spent a great two days, looking for elk over near the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, in Eastern Washington. Was basically just two real nice, long, hikes, while carrying a rifle. We got to know the local roads & trails, saw and heard an incredible variety of birds - I really can't adequately describe the sounds of the birds there at sunrise this morning - it was INCREDIBLE.
Did we even see an elk? No... Only elk tracks and elk poop. Neither of which fills a tag! But doggone we had a good time.
Yes, that's his favorite "big" rifle, the .30-06 Model of 1917, topped by a 6x Leupold, sighted in at 200 yards with 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips at a modest 2750 fps. Sadly, not a shot was fired from it during the past two days. On a good note, we had a blast. He drove the Jeep through 30" of water a couple of times, more smoothly than I usually manage. We hiked cross-country for miles and miles, in some of the most beautiful land. All private land, but open with his tag. Really felt blessed to be able to access such incredibly beautiful land.
Birds? Geese, ducks, turkey, woodpeckers and a myriad of other species... It was LOUD this morning when they all woke up and sounded off. Loved it!
What a fun little trip. Despite not even seeing an elk.
