Someone asked me a question the other day and I couldn't answer...so I figure someone here would have felt this on the shoulder...

i was asked about the 30-378 felt recoil with the factory muzzle brake installed. I was also asked if the velocity published on this is with the brake attached?

The second thing I advised that it probably is because if its factory it will have a 26" bbl then the brake..making for 28" length. This won't bother the velocity whatsoever. Noise is another issue :!:

I've shot every Weatherby rifle with the exception being a .378 and a .460 so I can't even begin to give a decent comparison.

Having said that those here who have squeezed off this monster...what is the felt recoil comparable to? Would it compare to a 300 WBY with no brake? Is it less yet? They were looking at possibly purchasing one of these

I have shot the 30-378 with and without the brake. With the brake(in an accumark) felt recoil was no worse than my 280, but EXTREMELY loud and actually blew a full can of coke off the bench and ripped the old sand bags I was using as a rest.

Without was not fun. Now this is not saying much, but it's the most recoil of anything I've shot. I don't have a bunch to compare it to, but I know it was worse than my lite 300wsm I had by a large margin.

Not near as loud, but still had a good bang.

I hope this helps

If you ever shot a 300 or 338 RUM then you know what the 30-378 is without the brake. I have owned every singe WBY made sans 338-378 and 240 Bees. I have shot all of the Wbys though with and without brakes.

That is a pretty good summary. Braked, the 30-378 is tolerable. Unbraked, it can give a good punch from the bench. One of the worst days at the bench I can recall had me shooting for break-in two 7.82 Warbirds, two 338-378s and a 30-378; none of these were braked. Honestly, I couldn't tell that much difference in any of them when it came to recoil.

I have shot a 30-378 Wby in a McMillian rifle with a Vias brake. My friend loads a 175 gr SMK at 3400 fps and the recoil was no different than a 270 Win-280 Rem. I really didn't think noise was too bad with just ear muffs but the percussion was impressive when spotting his shots. More so than my 338 RUM but that could be brake design. When shooting, it wasn't noticed.

Similar to an aught-six, w/brake.

More than my old bones could stand, without it
