Anyone have any experience with Reloader 17 with 85 gr. BT's in a 25-06? How 'bout in a fast twist 22-250? Hoping to find a powder they both like, 22 likes Varget, the 25 is so-so.

Doug -
I load for both of the calibers as well, and have tried R17 in the 25-06. You need to go with a slower burning powder for the 25 if you want to realize the full potential of the caliber. Most will suggest R22 or one of the 4831 powders. I have used R19 in the past for some of the lighter bullets in the 25.

Your 22-250 will work best with a burn rate around Varget, maybe even slightly faster burning powders depending on bullet weight.

R17 was designed for the short mags that have a different burn column than some of the more traditional designed cartridges like the '06. Besides, what's wrong with having a few different powders to experiment with :)

I played with R-17 in a 30-06 165/180gr bullets and it gave me nothing extra in velocity but was a good powder in the 270WSM with 140/150gr bullets.

I haven't chronographed it yet in a 243AI but groups at 300yds are pretty good with 100gr bullets plan on using that rifle on buck antelope hunt this year. I worked up some loads in a 7x57 gave alittle better velocity over IMR-4350 using 150gr bullets.

I've got a 22-250AI with 1/12 twist barrel and that be the next rifle I try R-17 in.

I've got some good barrels on the rifles I've tried R-17 in accuracy was good. If velocity is good in the 243AI I may try some R-17 in a 6RemAI.

My results with RL17 in the 30-06 mirror the report of 30-338. Again, I had excellent results with 130 grain E-Tips in my 270 WSM. They were so good, that I loaded up 70 for a hunting round. It looks as if it will work very well with short magnums as it was designed to do, but there will be limited advantages to standard cartridges. At least, this is my initial assessment.

Alliant's website claims that RL-17 has a burn rate similiar to IMR 4350 with better velocities. Sounds like this holds true for the short magnums and BR cartridges but not so much on the 06 family. I have to think it may hold true in the 22-250 as well, I am sure I will have to experiment.

I am currently loading 60-75 grain pills in the 22-250............that should help with this powder correct?

the data I read gave some very impressive velocities for the 25.06 but I have yet to try it I got to try the retumbo first

It is always good to experiment, allowing the one doing the experiment to draw conclusions for his own set up. However, the conclusion you have drawn concerning the short, fat cartridges appears to hold across a fairly broad spectrum of people who have tried the powder. Alliant, as is true for all powder manufacturers, will make every effort to find as many uses for the powder as possible. It looks good, however, in the short magnums. Now, if it will only become more readily available.

I actually had good luck getting some vel out of the '06 with re 17. I used quickload to compare some of alliants "max loads" among different cartridges and came to the conclusion that their '06 data was perhaps a bit mild.
I was able to work up to almost 2 grains more with several bullets. In a 22" tikka I was able to get a 150 tsx up to 3100 fps and a 180 bt to 2820 with no apparent pressure signs.
From what I've read this is a european powder that has been in use for a while accross the seas as a high energy powder. I doubt they developed it for our wsm's as some people think....it just seems to work good there.
