What is a good elk load for an m1 garand. I am getting an M1 through CMP and thought I should come up with an elk load and use it for back up to my 35 whelen. I know M1 garands have a pressure issue with the operating rod so what powder and bullet do you recommend. Any loads using BLC2 or varget.

Would like to see this same info. My son-in-law killed his elk with a cmp m1 last fall. I think he used a remington factory load of 165 gr but not sure. For next year we want to load it with an AccuBond or Partition but would also like to hear from Nosler regarding any pressure issues.

Backup gun???????? Heck it's a front line gun

The M1 Garand gas system is regulated for faster burning powders.
IMR4895 is a standard, as are powders in this range. (Varget, IMR4064,
AA2700, RL15 Etc.) As for bullets either the 180 PT or AB is quite suitable elk medicine. Also, check semi-auto magazine capacities for your state, some are restricted to 5 rounds.
