Reloading for profit?

Do any of you reload for profit? I do for some close friends and some family. My question is this, What do you charge to do it? I cover the cost on the materials of coarse but what about labor? I just ask for $3 a box of 20 rounds. Is that to much or to less? Just curious to see what others are doing.......

I won't generally load for someone. I don't like the liability. I've taken a rifle and worked with it to wring out it's capabilities for a friend, and worked up handloads in the process. If the friend handloads, I generally supply them with a copy of my notes and we agree to the caution they should drop back and work up carefully, but I've not had a problem on that front before.

If you are going to produce ammo for the general public you will need an FFL and some insurance. I would probably form a corporation to further limit your personal liability if a problem should arise.
As far as loading for family and close friends goes, it would be up to you to figure out how much your time is worth.
I find that most people would be willing to pay a pinch more than a remington core locks. Most also want to pay a little less than Federal premium ammo.

Nope....always free for my friends.
Yeah me too except for materials. Most of my friends wouldn't pay anything any way! I think some of them still have 15 of the first box they bought when they first got there rifle. minus 3 to sight in and 2 for all the deer they missed. :?

Ok.............thanks all.

Not reloading for the public, just some friends and family. My friends and this particular person in my family would charge me to reload if they were in my position also, so I dont feel so bad charging them.

Back when I was a teenager, I loaded for some friends and even a shop teacher. The profit I made covered the cost of my own habit. That was 30 years ago and times have changed.
I load for a couple of family members and one close friend and that is it.
Liability is too great a risk. All the loading I do for others is free.

only load for myself and my gradson who can't but I have a medium load in his rifle that shot some of each box I load before letting him shoot.

so................no charge? Loading over 120 rounds of 22-250 on a single stage press is worth at least $3 a box to me for this guy. Just my own opinion.

PS: This guys motto is "Nothing is free"

I may load for free + supplies, and If the guy has a caliber I don't have dies for,He'll have to purchase that, BUT I only load a box or so for hunting purposes. If the guy wants to pay, and will, and you want to charge him,... hell I'd go for $5.00 per 20 rounds at least. :)

Now that someone agreed with me, I dont feel so bad. I thought $3 was fair...

Well you shouldn't have felt bad any way. If HE was to complain, tell him to go check the price of a box of premium ammo. Then weigh that price against 1 pound of powder, a box of primers, and a box of his preferred
projectiles, and his once fired brass.

I usually try to get my friends to buy the supplies and just keep the 1/2 pound of powder or left over components for the trouble. to accept pay makes one liable. My brothers usually get a box or two a year for nothing if they pay me back for supplies. Depend on who it is I'll sometimes use range brass that I've sorted, cleaned and sized if I have it.

smitty81,

I attempted to sell a bunch of .307 Win. reloaded ammo on Gunbroker.com after I sold the rifle and I got a e-mail from a gentleman who had went the rounds with the BATFE when he tried to do the same because it takes a specific licence to load and sell ammo.
It seems the fines are in the (Many thousands) range for violations. I still do what I do for my friends but not for public consumption. In other words if you don't do it for profit or for the public you aren't doing it. It's kind of like you can give away wild game meat but you can't legally sell it.
The price you don't charge is up to you but I know I spend way too much time on my reloading so it's kind of a freebee beyond component costs.

10-4 everyone.................free it is I guess. Im sure I will be paid back in the future somehow.

I used to load .22-250 for one of my friends. He bought the components and dies, I provided time and equipment. Didn't mind doing it at all because whenever we go hunting, we mostly use his gear, he does most of the planning, and he scouts more than I have time for.

If someone want to come over we can load some shells for them together, But I generally won't "do it for them". As far as cost, the friend gets to buy the beer when we are done.

hi,,,i only load for myself and my son,,,people don't realize how much time is involved in taking a rifle and making that rifle shine with keyholes at 100 yards shot after shot.i have only 1 friend that reloads and we help each other out ,,,all the other ones buy factory ammo and are happy with their pie plate groups or snuff can groups and think there is nothing better than factory made ammo,,,their full of s--t,,,thanks for listening,,,

I too will not load for anyone other than my brother-in-law and my brother. As the man says, the liability is too great :)
