I just purchased a FAT Wrench torque tool. Previously I just reassembled everything by feel.

My 300 RUM is a Rem 700 BDL with factory wood stock but I had it bedded and pillars installed.

What would be the the proper torque setting and procedure to reassemble be with this set up?

My 30-06 is a 700 BDL with factory wood stock, not bedded and lacking pillars. Would the torque setting differ with this one?

Thanks for any input you may have.

Don

With pillars...you can go up to 60-65 in. lbs...some rifles like to be torqued tight, others don't....I'd let the rifle tell me.

When asked a Remington Customer service rep told me 30 - 35 inch pounds for my 700CDL with walnut stock, which had no glass bedding or pillars.

Without pillars my Rem's liked 35/35 in/lbs

I just got a stock pillar bedded and tried at 65/65 inlbs, 50/50 inlbs and 40/40 inlbs. 40/40 was clearly the most accurate setting. A friend has a gun pillared and he is 65/65 with great accuracy, so like RidgeRunner said, let the rifle tell you.

...pillars is different, dey don't compress like wood, generally taking a higher amount of pressure to lock in...

Thank you for the responses, knew I could count on good input. Far as the procedure do I start with the front action screw first? Both guns right now shoot very well, I suppose I could check the torque setting as is before taking apart then reassemble.

Thanks,
Don

I always placed the rifle muzzle down on a pad of some sort...applied down pressure on stock, just some pressure...nothing specific...and torqued the front screw, then the rear one.

Same procedure works for model 70's with 2 screws.

No idea if any of that really matters...its just the way I do it.

Okay I just checked the torque settings as they currently are on two rifles.

300 RUM Rem 700 BDL wood stock glass bedded with pillars appears to be:
45 inch pounds, rear
55-60 inch pounds, front

30-06 Rem 700 BDL wood stock only, not bedded, without pillars:

35 inch pounds both front and rear action screws
