Rem 700 Classic in 8x57

That's a good one David. The 1943 and 1944 a guy wants to be wary of cause they didn't properly heat treat the action.

My daughter shoots and hunts with a M700 Classic and it's a shooter. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if the right deal came along and $500 sounds like a great deal. I don't know if my cartridge is cool or not but a .300 Savage launching 125 grain NBT's is deadly on deer!

Someday I'll find a classic in .250 Savage that I can afford!

It's not flashy, and won't skin or gut immediately what you're shooting, it'll just plain work!
I think the guy you're referring to, I believe his name was Al Seiber, and he was an old WWII Navy vet. And he did load the his rounds .25 inches of shank on the bullet in the case.
When properly loaded, it can do the same stuff the .30-06 can.

Dr. Mike, are you the same person that has put videos of you shooting old rifles at long distances on YouTube?

Don't think so. I do shoot a few old cartridges; but I don't believe anyone ever filmed me for a video.
