my wife has decided she is done deer hunting :( SO i'm stuck with this light compact 243 as a predator rifle :p now that i need to shoot it, i need to accurize it and develop a good load for it. it has been a 2 1/2" 100yd rifle using 100gr rem coreloc's. plenty good for her past usage. but i would like to get this to the point of a 300yd coyote gun. to start i have bedded the lug, sanded the contact points off the barrel channel sides. this rifle came with a stock contact point at the front sling swivel. right now i'm debating it's removal and the load for the rifle. i'll start with the 100gr bullets i have on the shelf. 100gr sierra flatbase spitzer and 100gr rem coreloc. new winchester brass cci250 primers and h414. the tiny 18" barrel is the issue with this rifle. it has a great trigger. in the past i tried light bullets, faster powders but it has only liked slow powder and heavy bullets

Try these proven accuracy loads-

95 gr PT/BT -100 gr PT
41.5 gs IMR4350

70 gr BT
39.5 grs IMR4895

These are MAX loads so remember to start low and work up.

baltz,

Not sure where to start other than to say good luck ?? My wife's .260 is the youth model and I've never been able to get that gun to where I want it and I've launched about everything through it.
The same thing has been done with the bedding job and finally the front pressure point removed. ( POP I know, I know, don't yell at me ) but it was the last thing I could think of. ie... still didn't help ! No rhyme nor reason.. just plain large groups.....

Thinking a new stock / barrel combo will fix it right up though

I have a M7 Youth in 6mm Rem, and in the last two weeks I have picked up a take-off .260 Rem stainless barrel (20") and a take off synthetic stock (from another .260). So I am at $125 parts and shipping, and I should have a good deer rifle with some $$$ to the gunsmith.

Look around, folks are selling!

Why didn't you accurize it and do load development for it before your wife said she was done with it?
I don't know your personal situation but, I wouldn't expect my wife would be happy shooting a gun that I wouldn't shoot or at least hand load for myself.
I spend way too much time hand loading and accurizing to get away with that.

Why dont ya just trade it in to a kid that needs a good first gun and get you a good 22-250 of 223? or maybe a different .243?

2 1/2" was after accurizing it and load development. the light recoil load she shot is rp brass, fed 210, 38gr h4350, 100gr remington coreloc. at 2650fps

looking in my notes, i tried the 70gr and 95gr with different powders

i have 4 loads ready to test and have installed a removable plastic insert for a pressure point ( strip of shotgun shell hull) so i can test each load with and without pressure point

Just make sure you have the shim up at the recoil lug.

Let us know how you shoot.

shot good today. 100gr corelocs 40gr h414 shot under 2" 125yds at 2650fps. the 85gr sierra hpbt 44gr h414 shot 3100fps and a 1" 3 shot group.. i shot both loads in the 24" winchester also. i'll get the numbers crunched later. but roughly the 100gr load was about 125fps faster in the 24" the 85gr about 100fps

a few items of trivia. i shot 2 loads in both my 243's. my best load for the win mod 70pf. 44gr h414 85gr sierra hpbt 24" 3184fps, 18.5" 3093fps. 100gr coreloc 40gr h414 24" 2775fps 18.5" 2660fps. 89fps and 110fps difference 24"-18.5" the load i'll be loading for both is the 85gr

That 85 sierra bthp bullet shoots awesome out of my 243 as well, only I'm using IMR4350. According to Sierra, that particular bullet has the hardest jacket of all there bullets in every other caliber. It is suppose to drop deer dead 300+ yards with a shot through the ribs. I also found a good hunting accuracy load with the 85 Barnes TSX using the same charge of IMR4350. I feel a little more assured with the barnes bullet but I'm sure either through the ribs would do the job.
