I've been looking at these rifles for about a year now and am seriously interested in buying one, I like the way they look and it felt good when I shouldered it. Does anyone own one or know how well they shoot?

I had 2 of them in 350 Rem mag. Thay did not shoot well at all. I think the barrel mounted rib is a problematic issue.

I have one in .350 Rem Mag and have been very pleased. With handloads using 59 gr of IMR 4320 and .225 grain Swift bullets I can shoot 4 shot groups from a rest of less than 1 inch. Many 3 shot groups could be covered by a nickle. Recoil is not an issue and muzzle blast is OK using muffs. Others at the range could tell it was a magnum!.

Took a nice black bear with it in Idaho using the load above.

The rifle is easy to handle, come up to the shoulder ready to shoot, and fits well in a scabbard with a 2X7 scope. The only negatives I have found are the blade sight is visible in the scope and some longer bullets (Barnes and Nosler spitzers for example) cannot chamber from the magazine - they are too long. That's the main reason I went to the Swift - they are perfect.

Let me put it this way. I had a 700 Classic short action rebarrel to 358 win. Now I have a 700 Classic in 35 whelen and one (rebarreled) in 358win. I am not a fan of the modle 7 guide gun but the 700 Classic very much so. They missed the boat on that one for me. I have a 700 Classic in 270win too, see a patterm yet?

I prefer classic weapons too - and several of my battery except the 673 are classics. But, the 673 was available locally, had a nice laminated stock, was on sale at half price, and was perfect for the bear hunt.

I took a chance and was very pleased with its handling, accuracy, and performance. I would have preferred something without the shark fin sight and barrel rib.

I have also been researching .358 availability. Any suggestions? Just yesterday I was discussing a custom .358 with a gunsmith. but cost becomes a factor.

Thanks - the Ruger is one I have seen on the internet. That might be the way I will go - then replace the stock with a laminated wood. I really would prefer blued and walnut - but then again it's looking like a custom job. Maybe Roger will build a wood stocked Hawkeye.
