Respect for the 338 Federal

I have both cartridges the 338 Fed and the 358 Win - recoil is NOT a factory with either ! :grin: RJ

My 338 Fed is in the Tikka TS SS Lite rifle

The 358 Win is in a BLR rifle .

Candidly, the 358 BLR felt very similar to a 308 in my estimate. You could make it stiff; but with 200 to 225 grain bullets, it was comparable to a 308. The design of the BLR was user friendly.

Both the 338 Fed and the 358 Win are NOT much different then a 308 Win in felt recoil - i have rifles in all 3 and i feel very little difference even With the 30-40g r heavier bullets of the 338 & 358 myself ! :grin: RJ

NOW my BLR 450 Marlin with 500 gr Interbonds loaded HOT is a different storey when it comes to Recoil - it has LOTS ! :shock: LOL :grin:

All this 35 talk reminds me that their is a nice Rem 700 Classic for sale on this forum. If I already did not have two it would be sold.

I can see 150g spitzers loaded light for deer, 220 grainers for the big stuff up to buff and scrub bulls.

What sort of accuracy can one expect from a from-the-box BLR?

Thought hard about the BLR 325 WSM as well, light, powerful and very handy.

As for accuracy I had several loads that went consistently in the 3/4" range at 100 yards which I think is plenty of accuracy for almost any type of hunting.

Both of the BLRs I've had were in .358 Win; either gave me 0.5 inch groups at 100 yards, which never failed to put a huge smile on my face.

OK, all this talk about the 358 Win. and the 338 Fed has me wondering which one puts the most smack on game. So are these two very similar like the 338-06 and the 35 Whelen or does one stand out over the other?

I went back and read the previous post and see where the 358 Win is considered to be the better hunting round of the two do to bullet construction.

I have two BLR's in 358 Win and enjoy both of them!
One older (steel receiver, but not belgian) and one newer, both without the pistol grip.
Both shoot well, although the newer one (acquired from the good Dr - who is trying to talk me into letting him have it back, or threatening to steal it when I'm not looking!!! LOL) - will shoot the 225 gr TSX into 1/3" groups!
They have accounted fro several elk, moose and bear, and are my back-up rifles when bowhunting, guiding and will be pressed into service for Wildlife Monitoring service (AKA "Bear Watch"), used as saddle guns and also for as camp protection.
My daughter shot her first big game animal with my older model (Dr.Mike posted the story here two years ago) and while she doesn't want to shoot it off of the bench too many times, did not seem to mind the recoil while hunting.
Working on a 338 Federal rebarrel job on a Winchester Model 88 right now. Have been wanting one since the cartridge first came out. Had previously been dreaming of this project in the 308-338 wildcat. I will put a rear ghost ring sight on it and use it as a saddle gun.
