Respect for the 338 Federal

I have no ax to grind with military arms. Plus, I served in the Army myself, so cool your jets please. You both haye no reason to quarrel with me and probably have no idea where I am coming from. Plus, I have no quarrel with you if you wish to use military rifles for hunting. I am not stupid and realize that many of our calibers are/were used for military use at one time or another. If you want to pick a fight, go find a Muslim!

I'd love one as well. However, with a 340 Weatherby in the safe, and a customized Vanguard all-weather 30-06 as well as one in 300 Weatherby, I can't bring myself to add the 338 Federal to the mix. Not that I haven't gotten close, but it always seems like when I run the numbers I've got similar performance sitting right here in front of me.

However, I continue to dream.

"Need" is not part of the equation! I think the 338 is one of the most practical hunting cartridges to come to the market in the last 15 years. (Ok, since you asked ... .300 WSM, .204 Ruger, 338 Federal, and 7WSM)

I have a .30-06 and have for at least 50 years. I carried a .30-06 (M1), a .30 Carbine (M3), a .308 (M14) and a .45 ACP (1911) while in the service. I have owned a .308, several 1911's and .30-06's since I left the Army. I have absolutely no ax to grind with the Armed Services or with Veterans. Most of my friends are veterans.

My reasons for not wanting to carry a military configuration rifle while hunting are my own private feelings. I purposely am not making any political statement to anybody. Sorry, just not something that I wish to discuss on a public forum. You can respect that or not?

Just smiling OT3, with good feelings towards a fellow veteran.

I just think it's kind of funny when someone say's they won't use "military" rifles for hunting.

But Remington 700's, Winchester Model 70's, Mauser 98's, and other bolt action rifles commonly seen in hunting camps have also been used in military applications.

The line blurs too much for me to make such a distinction.

No disrespect. No quarrel. Just smiling.

Regards, Guy

Untwist your titties trader! Not everything is a personal insult aimed at you. If I was looking to start a fight there would be no question, I tend to be very direct in those matters..

I was making the same point as guy, almost every firearm platform has been used in military applications at some point. Everything from muskets, leverguns, bolts and autos have served at some time.

Sporting rifle trends tend to follow military trends. The bolt took over from the lever action after WW1 and now modern sporting rifles are on the upswing patterned off of the m16/ar15 platform.

As to your personal choice I encourage you to use whatever you like. You could just as easily use a period matchlock or tracking point rem 700. Just like I don't care what type of car or truck you prefer.

Then what is the point of busting my chops? I already know about the development of arms from the Broadsword and Halberd to the .338 Lapua's etc. I am just not enamored of carrying something that looks like household plumbing for my hunting needs. It does not mean that these guns don't have a place in the world, just not in my gun safe. Nothing further to talk about, is there?

I have been a soldier and paid my dues. I am just sick of all the Walter Mitty-weeny's (who are not veterans) at the local club, sitting behind me, with their barrel flash hiders set on a sandbag, on the back of the bench, blowing their muzzle blast in my hair/ears and their hot brass down my shirt collar!

I was polite about my preferences and it is time to move on, I even said Please!

So non veterans don't have the right to shoot what they like?

This kind of division in the ranks is why the anti gunners are winning.

Inconsiderate people are not segregated by gun type.

I'm no tactical ninja by any means but have found a place for ar type rifles in my arsenal. Between a short light ar15 in 223 for predators to my long heavy barreled ar10 that shoots tiny groups and rings long steel like a marching band drummer. I've come to appreciate their utility even if not terribly pleasing to the eye.

I have no idea what a Walter Mitty is but I know what a weeny is. It's a woman move to toss insults and then ask to drop it. It's like volleying pot shots standing under a white flag.

You threw the turd the punch bowl, Bud, not me. FYI, Walter Mitty was a fictional character who always pretended to be was he was not, hence the reference for the uninformed!

Actually in this case, inconsiderate people are defined by what they shoot! They pick AR's because they are immature and act like Walter Mitty. This does not include all AR shooters, BTW.

I would bet money that you are not a veteran either, Walter, so get off my case! Unlike others, you are going to keep going on this, aren't you. Ho Hum! I am going to bed and maybe tomorrow you will chill out?

I have been polite and tolerant with this immature idiot, until now. He needs to reread my responses, up until he got personal and then: CHILL!

I have a BLR coming in 358!

You will love it. I've had a couple, and each shot exceptionally well. I suspect I'll have another 'ere long.

Nice Fotis, the .358 should be a great elk in the timber rifle. Post some pictures when you get it.

Fotis, there was quite a while when .358 BLR's were very tough to find. I think Browning may have stopped making them for a while.

My buddy who just tagged his 50th bull (a number I'm still trying to imagine) wanted a hard hitting medium range lever gun. He found a .308 BLR and had it re-bored to .358 Win. Within a few years Browning was making them again.

I always liked the Browning BLR, and also the Savage 99, which is also hard to find in .358 Win...

Anybody know off the top of their head which hits harder at 100 yards, the near-mythical .348 Win or the .338 Federal or .358 Win?

Guy

Guy, I don't know if a black bear or moose could tell the difference between a 200 gr, .348 at 2700, a 210 gr, .338 at 2600 or a 225 gr, .358 at 2600. I would have to go with the .358 just for weight and diameter, I guess?

OT3. There is nothing I can say to make you look any worse than the things you type. I'm done with you, live a long and pleasant life.

As to 358 win. I have a savage 99 in 308 waiting to go to JES reboring to be converted, I'd thought about 338 fed but the 358 took the nod. 225 pt at 2500fps should be perfect for a classy peep sighted moose gun

You, sir, are a rancorous jerk who turned a mole hill into a stupid mountain of ridiculous blather. Learn some manners and maybe we will have some common ground for conversation. If I was 41 and not 71 (with health problems). I would be happy to teach you some bloody manners! Now go away!

I have both; it is difficult to believe one is vastly superior to the other. However, if push came to shove, you are correct that I would opt for the .358.
