Rifle for a new hunter

Heck, I shoot a .25-06 and like it a LOT.

Very little recoil, good accuracy, and lots of meat in the freezer & antlers on the wall because of it...

And I'm licking my chops at a few different ones out there as well

Good?

1. Longer stock than you'd like for a female or youth.

2. I personally prefer the 24 inch Vanguard barrels to the 22 inch Howa barrels. The 243 I have for my girls is a Vanguard placed in a Howa youth stock for the best of both worlds. The Howa stock is about $117 to your door from Legacy Sports. So, I'd find a Vanguard and swap stocks. The original stock can be sold or kept for future use.

Both the Howa and the Vanguard youth guns have 20 inch barrels, and I refused to buy one of those.

only one in my mind

Savage 7mm-08 youth. Very easy to paint!

I have been at work and will be talking to the other half when I get home and see if it is exactly what she wants.

BTW Fotis, how do I paint the stock?!

easy.... just pm me when you get it and I will hook you up.

Here is the one I did for my son in 325 WSM. His color scheme.

I really like that Fotis, now you got me thinking about the stock on my Montana I have coming.

The other wants to wait and shoot my 7mm08 before we buy her a rifle.

What is the overall consensus on the 6.5x55 Swede?

That is a need round in my opinion and in a good bolt action has plenty of pop yet very mild recoil. I was looking at some firearms at a local store yesterday and they had two Winchester Model 70 Featherweights. One was in 257 Roberts and the other was a 25-06! They also had a Kimber in 25-06 that had the most beautiful wood. I do believe I slobbered on it just a wee bit.

6mm...please...do not...tempt...me....lol. I like those Featherweights! If I hadnt just went for the Montana I would have the Featherweight I found in 280

The Swede is a very under rated round. I'm getting 2950 out of the 125 PT right now. I haven't done much work with it, and I believe I have room for improvement too, but you can classify it like the 257 7X57 and 280 Rem. The factory loads are very mild and you won't see much performance out of it until you handload. That said the Scandinavian countries have used it for years with 140's and 160's on moose. It is a very low recoiling round that is better than what is stated in the books in a strong modern action. I have one in a FW and it is a joy to shoot. I just need more time with it to find something that will work.

Excellent choice. :!: 100 gr BT's at 3300 fps and 160's at 2500 fps that penetrate to the middle of next week!
