Rifle for my Bighorn Ram or Mountain Goat next year!

Shots on goats and sheep can be surprisingly close, especially if you come at them from above. Shots close enough to have used arrows are not unheard of. However, there is always that time when the big ram or the big billy is bedded Waaaaaaaaaay over there. Then, you will want something that can reach out and touch them.

Well I am going to go with my savage 280 AI shooting either 160 or 140 ABs. Topped with a VX-III 4.5-14x40 LR. Weighs 8.25 lbs ready to hunt.

Jake,

That sounds like a great choice. It will work just fine up close as well as at a distance.

.257, can you compare the two scopes? (I assume they are both Conquests.) I've read nothing but good about the 3-9x (so I own three), but I've heard a not so kind word about the 3-10x.

Both of these rifles would go with me, depending on whether it was sheep or goat and how far it looked like shots were going to be:

300 WSM Remmy 700 LSS in a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock with a Swaro 3.5 X 10. The bolt has been fluted along with the barrel being cryo'd. Total package weight is 7 lbs 12 oz.

The other is a 7mm-08 custom Sako action, Shilen stainless 23 inch light weight barrel in a Brown kevlar stock with a 3X9 Swaro scope. This weighs 6 lbs 9 oz total.

Very nice set!

Just keeping the sheep and goat rifle simple...same as my moose, caribou and bear rifle. Nosler 48 in .300WSM topped with a Leupold 6x36

hodgeman,

That'll work. The 300 WSM is an excellent cartridge for all game in North America. I could certainly use it exclusively and not feel undergunned.

The scopes are both Swarovski, not Zeiss. I do have several Zeiss scopes on other rifles (all Conquests) and have not had any problems with any of them.

Thanks for the comment...the little 7mm-08 was built with high mountain hunting in mind. I have used it quite a bit for everything from elk to deer over the last 17 years. Some may say it is a bit small for elk sized game, but it has taken 3 elk using the 140 grain A-frame bullet with fantastic performance. The shots were all less than 300 yards. What prompted me to buy the 300WSM was my last hunt in Dillon, Mt. where I realized that in some locations i would not be able to get close enough to make an ethical shot with the smaller caliber. With the 300, shots can be taken out to 600 yards now. The other reason I finally bought another "magnum" caliber is that the case isn't a belted magnum like some of those p-dog rifles you shoot

Doh! It says 'Swaro' right there, too!
