Rifles in the field this hunting season

Gotta' love the idea of a Model 88 chambered in .358. That is just cool. I love my 325 loaded with 200 grain PTs, and the 88 would be a fine rifle to carry afield. My Model 94 in .356 has taken quite a bit of game, including elk, so I have no doubt that your .358 is adequate. My BLR in .358 accounted for a fine bison. Again, it will work just fine.

Between my grandfather and father that m88 has taken more deer and elk than I can count. I can remember when I was very young tagging behind my father on hunts wishing I was old enough to hunt with that cool 88.
Granddad hunted with it using open sights. When the rifle was passed to my father, he put a scope on it. I can remember hating that ugly scope at first.
Sadly the 88 only goes to the range and out in the field only to hunt in dry weather conditions due to the fact the old gun is irreplaceable and is extremely dear to heart.
The 88 shoots OK. I can shoot about 2" groups @ 100 yds using 200 gr ab's.

Sure would enjoy a couple more pics of that M88/.358  (Just sayin'). That's a great rifle and the M88/.358s are going out of sight, price-wise. Today they will bring a higher price than a Deluxe M71. I sure wish my .308/M88 was the bigger bore, but it is what it is. I like your combo of .325 & .358 for elk, some great choices. My .325 is a BLR as is my .358. Good Luck with that great combo!

It bears a few beauty marks, but it is a rifle that any rifle aficionado would enjoy carrying afield.

I'd simply like to thank you for those additional pics. I hope you might understand how a rifle guy, like me, might simply "have a thing" for one of those rifles. I understand your earlier mention of it being a "fair weather rifle" as I own more than a few of those, myself (count among them my M88 .308!). You have, not only a wonderful rifle, but more importantly, a rifle with a family history.

Thanks again for the pics!

Very nice pictures.. That 88 and 358 are a truly awesome combo. Hope you are able to make the 200 AB earn it's keep..

Since I'm only hunting deer and maybe if opportunity arise, bear. I will have either of these three.

VERY NICE DF! Those are some sweet rifles. I am really liking your Laredo.. Seems like you put it back together even better than it came from the factory! Awesome!

I am going to use my new acquisition this year on all my hunts. I know that this is extreme, that this will be much more than I need for my hunts, but I never had the opportunity in my life to hunt with the 8mm Rem Mag and so now I will do it. I guess in some cases it will instantly kill the game, gut them, skin them, hang them and make hamburger all in one motion, but I just have to know. It is not like I have owned one for 20yrs and hunted off and on with it like my 338Win mag or for 25yrs hunting off and on with my 300Wby or 300wins or all my hunting life off and on with the 30-06s I have owned, so I need to do all my hunting this year with the Big 8. Jordan will do the slaying with the Nosler M48 TGR 7mm08, he loves it.

Mike,

There is no such thing as over kill. I like those "No Tracking Required" hunts.
I shot this buck at 40 yds with the 338 RUM and a 250 gr AB at just under 3K.

AWESOME JD! AMEN on "No Tracking Required Hunts" I have always been for not tracking and when you put that bullet from a monster like that 338Rum where it is suppose to go they die even quicker. Yes, when I hit deer with my 340Wby, it was just over right there and I am with you on no such thing as over kill, dead is dead, just some dead is a lot faster than other dead.

M70 300 RUM for brown bear and moose this fall. And depending on the mood, I'll grab one of my 3 7WSM's for the rest. Kimber Montana leaves with me next weekend for caribou and sheep. Almost GO TIME!!

Sounds like you are ready AKhunter! Wish you ton's of luck and fresh batteries for the hunt.

DF - that 6.5-284 has a great looking laminated stock. Sweet...

Great rifles here guys. Great!
