Rifles in the field this hunting season

This is a great post :) it looks like there is going to be some great hunts this fall with lots of stories & photos .
There is such a wide variety of calibers, styles & manufacturers all have a place in the outdoors :)

Good luck to everyone, be safe & may you be blessed :)

Blessings,
Dan

For bear and elk seasons I will alternate between my M70 7mm Rem Mag and Encore 30-06. My wife will use her Encore 7mm08. For late season doe I plan to use my Encore 243 barrel. After big game seasons, I hunt predators with the Encores set up with 22-250 barrels and use 22 hornet for night hunting. I also enjoy hunting with my Contender 223 a lot of times for close to medium range stands.

Well I really am in a rut! The Super Grade Model 70 Custom, .270 Win for deer and the .340 Weatherby-Mark V for elk. Maybe the .338 Federal could get an outing sometime as well.

So far I've been out twice hoping to spot a bear. No luck.

Once with the .375 H&H Number One, 1.5-5x scope, 260 gr Nosler AccuBond

Once with the .30-30 Glenfield, 2.5x scope, 170 gr Remington SP

My son went out once with me, carrying the .30-06 M1917, 6x scope, 165 gr Nosler Solid Base

That's it so far, but we haven't even seen a bear yet, so I guess we could have saved the trouble and left the rifles at home!

Guy, it will come :) the game is the bonus. You sure have some beautiful country to play in!

Blessings,
Dan

Oh yeah!

This early, hot-weather bear hunting stuff is really just a great excuse to get up into the hills more...

Well, I'm all packed and ready to go. Leave way early tomorrow morning and off to the hunting grounds. Looking for sheep and caribou and will go after a bear if I see one. I decided to take the Kimber Montana after shooting it at the range on sunday. I plan on using both 160gr accubonds and 140gr ttsx bullets as they shoot about an inch apart on POI, which is good enough for me. Both bullets shoot submoa thanks to the pacnor supermatch barrel. This rifle is the least finicky that I have ever owned. All I did was grab some reloads that worked well in my two model 70 rifles chambered and 7wsm and shot for groups with pleasant suprise.

Good for you AK have a safe and successful hunt. Remember lots of photos to go along with your stories:)

Blessings,
Dan

Whitetail and Muley: T/C Venture 270, 130 gr BST, such an accurate rifle
Hogs: The Win 1895 30/06 if my front sight issue can be resolved in time

At some point I'll take out the my Model 70s, Pre64 30/06 made 1952 168 gr BST, and the Post 64 6.5x55, still factory 140 gr A/B Nosler Trophy.

So many rifles, so many deer tags in Texas :)

Here in a few weeks I'll be pulling out the new Benelli SuperNova for Dove season.

Sorry...don't hunt Whitetail... reasons are varied and complex at times.

But I do hunt feral hogs.... primary rifle is a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. Changed front and rear sights to Williams FireSight on front.... Williams Ghost Ring for rear. Shoots 200 grain Remington Factory point of aim - point of impact at 75 yards.

I still have about 100 rds of factory ammo left, so have not started reloading for this puppy.

Also carry either an S&W 4" Model 57 or Model 25 as backup. Brush can get very thick where I hunt.

Also have a ranch I've hunted a couple times.... lots of rough, open ground. My 308 CZ550 works there, and tuning the Tikka 7mmMag up for it. Ranges can go out too 600 - 700 yards.

I have committed myself to taking my model 71 Carbine in the woods this fall for Missouri whitetails. This will be the first time since I started hunting with Model 70's ( 1998) that I wont have one in my hands when the light breaks the horizon to the east. It is outfitted with a lyman 57 peep and shoots lights out with it.

Once anterless season rolls around I am torn. My 1949 Model 70 is in the middle of a restocking project and I will probably keep her on the workbench till I am done. I may just carry the 71 full time this year. With a daughter turning 5 this winter I will probably load up some 100 gr partitions for her Model 70 in .243 and try to do some R&D  . I also bought some 60 gr Partitions to load up some for a Number 1 V in .223 that I believe will do the trick for her as a first deer gun. Shots where I hunt are under 75 yards, and I would only take broadside shots as well. I believe that little pill would do the job. I would also like to do some R&D with that gun as well.

Stupid question Pre64, The Model 71 seems so familar to me but I can't picture it. Refresh my memory please.

It is the same rifle as the 1886, but chambered in the one and only 348 Winchester.. It is a tank of a rifle.. It also sits on my hit list!

Jimmy, Scotty nailed it.

Probably the second sweetest sound in the world is an 1886 or a 71 bringing brought back up into batter and hearing those lugs lock tight... The first sweetest sound being a pre 64 model 70 bolt closing...IMO.

Deer will be Remington 700 classic 300 savage with 150 interlocks
Elk will be dependent on weather. If in timber with snow the 350 rem mag with 225 NP gets the call. If in open country and no snow either the 8mm with 220 hornadys or 300 Rum with 200 accubonds.
