Started from the truck at 6:45 AM and got back at 6:15 PM. Went 10.6 miles, 11 1/2 hours, and went from 5422 feet to 7866 feet. We went up the south side of a east-west creek ridge. Hit the divide and went north for 2.6 miles, and then went down the north ridge to the truck. Saw 4-6 old bull tracks on top and THAT WAS IT FOR ELK TRACKS THE ENTIRE WAY! Saw a 3 point mule deer buck and doe on top. Still had a great day which started and ended in the dark.
About 2/3 of the way to the top had to have a snack.

Jeff hates having photo's taken. Does it show? :?:

This photo is from today with Andy on another spot about 15 air miles south east. This gives a better overall view of the area and how we went up this sucker!

Here's Andy from this morning. Had a great time again with both him and my son the previous day. Saw elk today, but on private property where we could not access.

Last picture looking south towards Phillipsburg and the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness. It's beautiful back in there too. Wish my camera had more zoom on it.

Gearing up for next Thursday to Sunday on that Special Hunt with the two boys. It should be fun and hopefully we'll find some elk.

Phenomenal photos. The boys certainly look as if they are enjoying themselves. Though it would be easy to say too bad about the lack of game, the fact that you covered so much territory in such a beautiful setting obviates such commiseration.

Gol-Dangit anyhow... Now matter how you look at it, overcast or not, spectacular scenery there 6mm. Glad you and the two younger men had some "man-time". Glad you guys had a great time. And yes, funny how teens dont like parents taking their pics..

Thanks for sharing Dave!!

That is some beautiful country you are hunting.
Good luck to you and the boys.

You are in one of the most beautiful places created. Thanks for the great pictures and the reminder of why I like P-burg so much.

Beautiful man! Take them photo's any way.....some day. Way to make a memorable day. CL

Its good to get them out in the woods. They don't like being cooped up all the time.

Those are some really good looking pics. Looks llike some great elk country as well.

David,

You have a real gift in framing your photos. That photo of the snags in the snow is professional. It may become a monitor background for me. Kind of transporting Montana to British Columbia.

Agree. I neglected to comment on that photo with the snags in the snow... Terrific shot.

Thanks for the photo comments. The new digital cameras make it easy. Take lots of pictures and then maybe one or two turn out really well!

Great pictures and story! I'm waiting for the video and sound now.....seriously, you took us on the trip, thanks!

Not a problem, I know the the contiental divide runs north and south through the western part of the state. I don't have any really good spots to protect right now!!! I moved a coupe of years ago and am not happy with the quality of the hunting here.

Elkman,
I am sorry sir. The divide in question here is a north south running ridge that separates a creek, On the west side without giving my exact locations away is the upper ? Creek and on the other side of this divide is the lower ? Creek. On the west side of the ridge mostly it drops off pretty steeply with a few little small drainages that drop down into the upper creek about 2 miles down. On the east side of this divide the smaller drainages and canyons drop down about 4 miles, some longer to the bottom to the lower creek.

If you look in the one photo taken from just a guess of about 15 air miles away, the ridge on the left of the picture that goes up to the top and has a clearing area about half way up the ridge, this is the one my son and I went up that morning clear to the top. We then hiked to the right in the photo frame to the far right edge of the picture where the open parks on top can be seen and on the right side of those parks. That is the ridge that we then walked down to the truck. You cannot because of another ridge in between us and the one in question, see clear to the bottom of the side ridges in the pictures. The lower creek in the bottom is about 1/4- 1/2 mile wide in spots and has some meadows and willows along the creek. It is pretty country. A lot of the lower stuff is private property.

Good hunting!

6mm,
Those are some incredible pics. The experience of Hunting the High/Back Country is indescribable to my Friends. Pictures taken on many of my Hunts, like yours, are breathe taking. When I attempt to tell them of the experience , they just don't get it. Having lived and hunted in Colorado for 10-years has afforded me many memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. You just have to be there as they say. People here in Tennessee just look at me when I tell them of the walked distances and unbelievable steep and rough terrain we encounter. Their comprehension of Elk Hunting is likened to the Hunting Shows that portray Elk Ranches with Bulls running every where. Elk Hunting is far from easy. Where I come from, the work just gets started after you pull the trigger. The area you hunted looks like good Elk Territory. Good Luck with the boys getting some Elk.

That is a long day out hiking/hunting. Cudo's to your energy and determination. I'm looking forward to seeing the next part of the saga.
