I saw a Savage 110 .243 at the gunshop where I work part time and it started me thinking about doing a caliber conversion. I've heard the barrel nut system makes the Savage somewhat easier to do "gunsmithless" barrel changes than other brands.

Ideally, I was thinking about a .358 Winchester since I have rifles in all the other .308 family calibers but also considered a .243 varmint configuration. Another .260 wasn't out of the question either.

Has anyone done this and, if so, what barrel manufacturer made the barrel/kit you used? Pros or cons? I saw Shilen kits on the Brownell's website but the calibers were kinda limited. The customer reviews were mostly positive, though.

Thanks, Ron

Doubt you would be disappointed in a 358 Win. One of the best of the lot. It is an awesome round with alot of great bullets available. I think once you put a deer or two down with it, you would be impressed. Scotty

Don't know much about the .358, but I built a 280 AI on a Savage 110 this last year. I pput a Pac Nor barrel on it, but A good friend of mine bought a shillan from the sharpshooters supply in a 300 WM and it shoots good. I got a .363" group out of my 280 AI today. All you need is a go/no-go gage, barrel nut wrench, and a barrel vise. Fun to do yourself and very functional.

I have a Savage chambered in 7mm Rem Mag, and I should figure ou what belted mag cartridge I want to convert it to. Problem is, there's not that many belted mags I like, and I already have a .257 Weatherby and a .300 WinMag. Maybe .264 WinMag? .270 Weatherby? (Would Roy turn over in his grave if I chambered a Weatherby cartridge in a Savage?)

I doubt he would care and at least you would know it would shoot! Scotty

Cloverleaf, I'd looked at the Midway site, too, but would really like to try to go the 358 route first if possible. So far, I haven't found any of the kits in 358. Thanks, for the info, though.

Ron
