Any opinions. This will be a Ruger #1 458 lott.
Need something that will last.

Fixed power 2.5x Leupold compact. Not much to break, excellent scope for short - mid range work.

I have read in any number of publications that the .458 Lott is about the hardest thing on scopes to have ever been developed. One author claims his usually kills a scope in about 20 rounds.

I have never owned anything that big, but have shot a fair number of other peoples large caliber rifles. If I were to get a rifle like you are going to I would probably mount a Leupold 1.75 X 6 on it and pray a little. Another good option might be a Leupold 2X7 scope. I shot one on a .338 Win Mag for years and never had any problems. Both of those scopes are light and compact and might survive the recoil better than heavier scopes.

Good luck, let us know how bad the recoil is on that thing.

Leupold 2X7 scope

that is what I am looking hard at.

Pop,

I'm a big fan of the VXIII series so I would suggest in order of preference

1.75x6

2.5x8

1.5x5

I would get ahold of BJ or Lerch for a good deal.

How about an LPS?. I have one that was mounted on my 6lb. 338 Win Mag. Though scope, been through alot of used and even abuse. It wears the scar proudly. The diamond coated lens is scratch free and clear as ever . Just sold the rifle but keep the scope. I'm hoping to get another big bore someday. Maybe one of the RUM's.

By the way, I haven't seen this scope being discussed much.

The only scope I've ever heard of not failing on a serious rifle like that long term is a Zeiss Diavari. One water buffalo outfit in Australia replaces VX-IIIs (1.5-5) every six months due to failures on regular 458 Winchester Magnums.

Maybe a Zeiss Conquest 1.8 - 5.5 would hold up maybe a VX-III if you don't shoot the 600 grainers too much. I'd skip the VX-II, it's a two-piece tube.

I own many different brands of scopes, Leupold, Swarvoski's, Zeiss and Kahles. But when shooting the heavy cannon's it's hard to beat the Leupold VX or Vari XIII 1.5-5. You want as much eye relief as you can get. My Weatherby V Deluxe in 416wby wears a Leupold Vari XIII 1.5-5. I'm sure you could mount higher power scopes but if I chose to remove the accubrake I would have the 1.5-5 mounted.

The bad thing is I have 3 (count them 3) 3x9 Leupy compacts sitting around. I think I will stick one of them on the beast for plinking loads for now.

457 cal round ball with 10 gr of Unique at 1000 fps or so.

300 gr lazarcast cast reduced loads at 1300-1500 fps.

These loads are no problems with the Leupy compact. Heck she can probably handle full loads and eye relief is nice.

Now when I start my retina detachment experiments with full loads  then I will replace her.
