Maddog, that is an AWESOME pair of rifles! That 458 is just AWESOME!

Are they both 2.5X Leupolds on them?

Wow, great build, those are really sharp!

Yup, 2.5x on both. The .308 is a duplex reticle, and the .458 is a German #1. I've hunted the .458 and it's great fun. I usually shoot a 350gr round nose at about 2200fps. It's pretty mild and does serious damage on mule deer.

Thanks MD, I am thinking I may try that 2.5X out on my Guide Rifle. I have been wanting to try it for awhile and I think that rifle is the perfect venue to give it a whirl. It already has the rail, so it should be a quick set up.

Never had any desire for a scout rifle. Just does not float my boat. I guess the military guys like them pretty well. More power to them.

Anyone here have any hands-on experience with the Ruger "Gunsite Scout Rifle" ?

Yep, I like mine. I haven't shot any groups, just ringing steel out to 300 yards with it so far.

Just a thought, but it would probably balance well in a Hogue Overmold on the economy side, definatly a Mcmillan....

Everyone here is an enabler

Nice rifle! What scope is that?

Leupold custom shop 4x20 EER. Actually a 2x would be a little better for me I think since it would be easier to keep both eyes open.

I unexpectedly bought a Ruger GSR - just to have fun with, and took it to the range yesterday for a quick look to see how it shoots. Off a bi-pod and without a rear bag (forgot it at home), it produced groups just under and just over 1” at 100 yards with 165 BTs. I'm currently using a Leu Compact 3-9 mounted in the traditional location using the included Ruger rings. With the right range equipment and more comfortable temps, I’m sure it’ll do even better.

Compared to my Rem 700’s, the Ruger’s action fit & finish are somewhat more crude. The trigger sure isn’t a Rem either. However, the finish of the bore and chamber are very-very impressive.... I’ve only ever seen a bore and chamber shine like that on top quality aftermarket barrels. After 40 rounds, it still shone, and the first cleaning patch pushed through as easily as though you’d already cleaned it. I haven’t removed the flash suppressor yet to get a closer look, but I can’t detect any copper on the rifling. BT

That sounds good! I can smooth out the external finish on a rifle if so inclined, but it's nice that Ruger finished up the bore & chamber so well.

Looking forward to a few more photos and range/hunt reports with that rifle!

Nice...

Guy

Pretty sweet. The ruger triggers are a touch crude until you get to the Varmint/Target that two stage on those is awesome. I can also say I've never seen a Ruger not shoot right outta the box. My M77 in 280 runs 140's in .25 @ 100 yards. Brothers M77 MKII in 257 Bob runs under an inch with no real LD and my M77 V/T in 22-250 with factory rounds ran 3 in .075 and my handloads on a bad weather shoot 5 into .220. They are accurate.

I've got a Ruger Scout Rifle.
As an "all purpose" hunting rig it leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. The boat rudder magazine gets in the way and I'm not a fan of forward mounted optics except for close in action. On a combat rifle I see the merit of forward mounted optics. I do think the Scout concept would serve well in a dangerous game element and should be further explored for that application.
As far as shooting the Ruger Gunsite Scout, it's a very accurate out of the box rifle. Of course I got mine from the first production run and I don't know if the accuracy has degraded since then. With a 3 round magazine, traditional mounted optic, and used under 250 Yards I think it might be viable for my uses. As it is, if I couldn't carry an AR in the truck I'd probably opt for the Ruger as it's carbine legnth is handy when manuvering around vehicles.

Very nice rifle. That is one 308 I wouldn't mind having. A few buddies have them and they are nice rifles, for what they are built for. Rugged, dependable rifles..

G'Day Fella's,

I'm not sure if this rifle would address all of Col/Mr Cooper's criteria, for a Scout Rifle but here it goes.

Doh!

Yeah, I think that would be pretty darned close Homer. Cool looking rifle.

Believe that would be pretty close to Cooper's "Lion Scout"....also in .350RM- otherwise known as the "Fireplug".

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for the kind comments SJB358!

Hodgeman, thanks for the insight into the "Lion Scout" / "Fireplug" rifle, I wasn't aware of this!
I'll go and Google it up!!!

The single-stack 10-round Ruger magazine is .867" thick. The dual-stack 20-round M14 mag is 1.027" thick. A difference of 0.16"...

Wish we could use the M14 mags....

G'Day Fella's,

BeeTee, I recently read an article on the Ruger .308Win Scout Rifle in Rifle Magazine.
Apparently, Ruger engineers were trying to utilise the M14 detachable magazine in this rifle but they were not able to get reliable feeding.
Thats why they went to the Accuracy Int'l mags, in that rifle!

I suppose in an M14 rifle, the magazine to chamber effort of loading a cartridge, is consistently forceful!
Where as in a bolt action, it can be varied. That may be the reason Ruger went that way?

Doh!
