Seating Depth Question

I was loading a bunch of bullets last night for the .260 as we discussed in the other thread when something curious happened. I adjusted the seating depth on the die and confirmed with a sample bullet it was hitting consistantly at 2.803. I loaded about nine bullets and all were within about .001 COL I just chalked that up to differences in bullet tips. Then I loaded another one and it was COL .10 shorter than the rest, I put it aside and continued with two more and the measured the same as the first nine. I put the odd one in the bullet puller and seated it again and again the same thing .10 too short. I pulled the bullet out and tried a different bullet and the same thing?? Just curious as what could cause this?

Did you change how hard you are cycling the ram on the press? I use a press that you can really cram on and make the bullet seat a little deeper. Seat one "light" and measure COL, then press hard at the end of the cycle and measure again.

Wow that was one I would have never thougt of. Makes a bunch of sence.

It can be from too much pressure when seating and also from the ogive being a little different or if you are measuring OAL to the bullet tip, that could be the problem. If you have a tool such as the stoney point for measuring to the ogive, you will get better results.Rick.

I tried that, I usually push it all the way down and let it bounce three times. Tried seating about 7 or 8 times and always came out with the same measurement everytime. Not a problem with either of the other 11 bullets.

In a box of speer 180gr 358 bullets i found one bullet that had a slightly different profile mainly less jacket and more lead at the tip. It did seat different as well. The hornady dies I use locate hafe way down the Ogive. So unless I am loading round nose bullets tip deformation usualy does not effect the OCL for my stuff.
