Went out this morning just driving the backroads with my dad. Seen a yote cross the road and by the time I got out he was 200 or so yards. Did not have time to rangefind. He did stop however and thats all I needed. 1 shot out of the Swift and the 40g vlc at 4500fps did the rest.

You are producing very well on yotes. After all your coyote shooting, has your state put the Coyote on the endangered list?

Thanks for the kind words. Yah there is no shortage of them things around here. We went out later in the evening and we called one in to 200 yards. This time my dad popped him with the mini 14 and the winchester factory 45g hollow points. We saw 3 coyotes today and got 2, so not a bad day at all.

They are incredible survivors, given how hard folk have tried to eradicate them. Probably at the end of the world, the last living creatures will be coyote and roaches!
While Javelina shooting in W. Texas, my guide set up to shoot coyote, but he did not know what he was doing and I realized later, after a bit of reading, that we were too exposed. We saw a coyote, but 400 yards behind the yote, ranch kids were playing around the house. Later we told the rancher that we'd seen the coyote and he asked why we had not fired. "Your kids were down range from the coyote!", the guide responded. "F--- the kids! Kill the coyote where ever you see him!", was what the rancher said. Hyperbole, for sure, but it demonstrates how hated ole Wiley really is in cattle and sheep areas.

remingtonman_25_06,

Congrats on a fine looking coyote. He looks to be a 40 lber.
Did you get an exit with the 40 gr VLC?

He was actually only 25lbs, he was a male. I thought he would go maybe 35lbs, but on my bathroom scale, he was only 25lb. He was a nice one though, since it was a headshot, I ended up skinning him out. Make a nice pelt. I rarely get exits with the 40g vlc unless its beyond 200 yards. The bullet is just to light and going to fast 4500fps. It does wack them pretty good out to 300, but after that you need to make a solid hit or they'll be running. I have shot about 5-6 coyotes with this combo and I have only lost 1. The only bullet that has exited out of the 5-6 was a shot about 250. The little 40g entered behind the shoulder and left a hole about 4 inches across and wide. He still was able to get up and go about 50 yards before I shot him again. There was another with him that took off as soon as I popped him. I hit the 2nd on the run at 250-275, but I think I hit him a little to far back. I tracked his blood for about 1.5 miles and ended up losing him. I only have 5 shells left with the 40g vlc's, then its back to the 55g btip at 3925fps. That is an absolute dynamite yote combo out to 600 yards. Only reason I am using the 40g vlc's now is because I had a box laying around and did not buy a box of the 55g btips. I figured I would use them up. I totally agree that the yote will be one of the last animals to be on the earth. They are so tough and smart for a dog, its unbelievable sometimes there will to live. Pound for pound, they have to be the toughest animal out there. Of course, thats just my opinion. This coyote makes #52 for the record.

looks and photos can sometimes be deceiving, he sure looks bigger. That pelt is prime too. Do you call them in or spot n stalk with the open area you hunt.

Here in MI, we have a lot of woods and farms. Ultra long range shots are rare. I hunt in the thick stuff or on the edge of a field and call. I have both hand calls and a Foxpro 416 electronic caller w/ a remote. Both work but I think it depends on the coyote. They always circle downwind. I have found their tracks 50-75 yds downwind many times where they busted me and I never saw a thing.

Yah I really thought he would go bigger. I really liked the color phase of him. Actually it all depends on the day for what type of hunting we'll do for them. We try to split the difference up, and it also depends where we go. We have the foxpro, its an awesome caller. Sometimes we will call, and sometimes we just drive the roads and spot them and if there not farther then about 800 yards, I'll shoot at them with my 25-06 or my 300 RUM. Like that one day I shot mine in the morning we were just driving, basically road hunting for yotes. Later that night we called, and seen 2 and my dad shot the 1. So it all depends on what we feel like doing I guess. Them dang dogs are smart though. Where we call, its usually sagebrushy. So they come in through the tall sagebrush and sometimes you cant see them. It gets frustrating sometimes. Where we just drive around, its wheat fields and dirt fields and such. We usually just catch them mousing around. The farthest yote I banged was with my 300 RUM at a lasered 775 yards. I hit him on the 2nd shot with the 200g SMK.

remingtonman_25_06,
