finally got the new rifle ( win model 70 270wsm ) out to the range i must say im pretty happy with it,, sighted in at 100yds about an 1 1/2" high,, was using federal fusion 150gr,, groups are under an 1",, at 200yrds im hitting a 4" metal gong dead center,,im really excited about that,, granted the fusion is the only brand of ammo that has been thru the rifle thus far and i do plan on reloading for the 270 but im still pretty happy with it,, i do have one question how high would you sight in at 100yrds for elk??? 1" 2" or dead on at 200yrds,, im wanting to be able to get the most range i can without sacraficing close range shots if needed,, thanks,,

If you're dead on at 200 yards, you should have pretty good reach with that 270 WSM. You'd be roughly 4 inches low at 300 yards and 9 inches low at 400 yards. Holding on hair, you'd still be within the kill zone at that distance. Just my two cents.

I'd go 2 1/2" high at 100. With the factor fusion that translates to:
2 1/4" high at 200
dead on at 250
3" low at 300
8" low at 350
14" low at 400

If you plan to shoot beyond 400 yards, it's time for some M1 knobs.

Many sight in at a 200 yard zero, but when you sight in at 300 yards, doing so imo eliminates more guess work for shots out to 400-450 yards.

Best thing to do is chrony the hunting loads, then go to an external ballistics calculator (on the Hornady site), and type in all the info; bullet BC, O/Temps, your zeros and compare the trajectory differences between a 200 & a 300 yard zero.

It`s easier to estimate a hold under than hold over shot. That`s why I prefer a 300 yard zero for my elk hunting.

That is about right.

with this info where would i be hitting at a distance less than a 100?? while i dont really see it happining with an elk,, im just courios  also i cant see myself taking a shot over 300 im just not that good and im not afraid to admit it

[I'm]just not that good and im not afraid to admit it.

Know your limitations and stay within them. Shortly, you'll be able to stretch the distance as you gain confidence in your rifle and in your own ability.

Dont worry about less then 100 yards.

With your zero at 250 yards, at 25 yards your .1" low, at 50 yards your 1" high, and 75 yards your 2" high, 100 yards your 2.5" high for a 250 yard zero. At 150 yards, your 2.9" high, as your bullet has reached its highest point of line of sight. This is a good sight in for big game.

I try not to get my maximum height above 3 inches. You tend to shoot over things when your in a rush, at least on coyotes and deer. Elk give you a lot more room for error.

With most of my rifles, I zero 3" high at 100 yards, and with most of my rifles, I get between a 250-300 yard zero. With the 270WSM, you are looking at a 275 yard zero, and less than a foot low at 400 yards. RM2506 is right on though, shooting high is easier with the 270WSM, but you can hold on hair all the way to 400 with elk and have 0 worries about making a good killing shot. Good luck with your 270WSM. It is an awesome rifle and will likely make you proud on a longer poke. Scotty

I have tried a lot of different flat shooting magnums and have found it's really hard to beat the 2 1/2 " high at 100. At 3 inches I too often shot high in the back while 2 1/2 just flat works for me!

From the little time I have been on this forum I have heard alot about the 270wsm. It has got me thinking that maybe I need to try one of these and if my wife asked it again will be my only 1 rifle
With the extra poop I think that a 140gr. AccuBond would be hard to beat.
Just thinking it always gets me in trouble

Blessings,
Dan

One thing you must take into consideration is the terrain you hunt. If it's flat land you can get away with 3 inches high at 100, while if your hunt is in steep ground that you may shoot at steep angles, up or down, you will need to sight in lower. I missed a great buck from shooting steeply downhill while sighted at 3" with a 7 mag! Elk are a bigger target and a little more forgiving.

the ground we hunt has both flat valleys and steep terrain,, im really thinking 1 1/2'' ta 2'' at 100yrds is gonna be fine,,
