Sig 10mm Range Day

I bought a Sig P220 10mm Hunter a couple years ago with the intention of shooting a deer with it. I've been handgun hunting for a while now but I've never used a semiauto. While it has excellent iron sights, I really wanted to put a red dot on it & EGW makes a nice adapter that takes the place of the rear sight. I mounted a Vortex Venom with 3-MOA dot and loaded up some 180gr Hornady XTP's and 180gr Swift A-Frames. After doing some research here and other places, I chose Longshot powder for velocity and because I could find it locally.

Today was the first range session with the red dot & hunting loads. I'm a little hesitant to post my powder charge because it seems Hodgdon reduced it and I'm above max now but Nosler's manual shows charges pretty similar to Hodgdon's old data. I was hoping for 1200 fps in the guns 5" barrel and exceeded that.

At 25 yards every load was under two inches if I did my part. I was getting around 3-4" at 50 but would occasionally have a flier that really opened it up. I was hoping the XTP's and A-Frames would have a similar POI but the A-Frames hit about 5 inches right of the XTP's. Same weight bullet but the A-Frames are a good bit longer. A little more practice and I'll try and get a deer within 50 yards!

Loads consisted of Starline brass, 180gr XTP's and A-Frames, Longshot powder and CCI large pistol primers. Picture of the chrono is from the XTP load. I had another with a higher charge that averaged 1299 fps with XTP's and 1245 fps with the A-Frames. The slower XTP load seemed to shoot better.
The 180gr XTP and HAP have the same POI for me but...
The terminal performance on water buckets are quite different.!
The HAP went through five one gallon jugs and stopped inside the back of a five gallon jug. The XTP stopped inside the 2nd one gallon jug. All at 25 yards.20250921_085752.jpg20250921_085832.jpg

Nice expansion with the XTP but I'm surprised it only went 2 jugs. I wonder how the 200 gr XTP would do.

Well, I'm not sure if it makes a big difference but these were ice-cream jugs, about 8 inches diameter.

Tell me about your reflex sights. Which one do you like the best?
I have a Sig Remeo and a Holosun. I like the Holosun way better.
the sro is a new 1 along with the rmr hd, so no experience with either. as far as the dpp this is my 2nd 1. i like it, but had difficulty mounting it to the firearm i wanted it on (m/p). the optic plate according to s/w was supposed to be the correct 1, but it was a no-go. i moved it to a glock.

a list of rds i still own and use
romeo1 (3)
vortex venom (4)
c-more (1)
swampfox justice2 (1)
rmr type1 (3)
eotech eflx (1) haven't used it yet
crimson trace hro (big optic for a semi-auto, but bought for an AR style firearm)

i'm sure there are a few more not listed. the vemon's are the oldest i own (10 years +/- between the 4) and all still hold 0. romeo1's are on an AR10 lightweight build w/magnifier and handles the recoil just fine, p226 has 1 on there for over 5 years (closer to 8) & g40 has the last 1. all of the venom's are on semi pistols and only replaced the batteries when needed. the c-come (rds, not the larger optic) works great and only a battery replacement from time to time as needed. no issues with it. the swampfox i had a bit of trouble with at 1st, but figured out it was the mounting causing the problem. i have the multi reticle version of it, but haven't shot it that much (100 rounds or so). type1 is smaller than i like, but works great. all of these are on full size semi's on 9mm, 357sig, 40s/w, 10mm & 45acp mostly on glock and m/p.

That P320 is definitely shooting well! I've had good luck shooting the HAP bullets in other calibers, always seem accurate but they're target bullets and not meant to expand. They almost look like an XTP without the skives etc.

@TexasLife man you got some red dots! I only have experience with a Holosun on my duty gun but its been really nice. Liking the Venom on this rig but have very few rounds through it so far. Glad to hear they're holding up well for you. For the price they seem like a great buy.

haven't owned the viper due to not liking where the battery is/was. venom's have all worked just fine.

the hap's are the xtp's by design for competitions w/o the expansion of the xtp. i haven't tried any yet.
