Slow loads for 7-08?

I want to shoot the 175ABLR and the 195 Berger at around 1800fps into jugs. I want to simulate impact at 1000+ yards. Q/L says full loads BMG50 or H869 will do that at about 27kpsi. Is that safe? Will it work? I'm concerned they'll just keyhole. What do you think?

I'd be pretty scared of trying that ultra slow powder. And I'd love to tell you exactly why but I can't! It just seems like if it was a good way to produce slow loads you'd see a lot more of the data out there..... instead the trend is towards bulky faster burn.

Inconsistent ignition is the likely result, with the possibility of an uneven curve with a nasty spike.

H4895 or Trail Boss would be my picks.

Thanks guys. Hogdon says H4895 is the best to use as a reduced load. They say 60% of a max load of a listed cartridge will be a good starting point. They list 38.5 as the max for a 175gr Partition. So 23.1gr is my starting point. 24gr supposedly will give me 1800fps. I was kind of leary about a 60% fill. I'll try a few and see how they chrono out.

Scott,

H4895 is the right powder choice.

I did a 1000 yard simulation with the 7mm 150 gr ABLR and 168 gr ABLR
bullets shot from my TC Contender in 7-30 Waters with a 14" barrel.

I loaded a few ELD-x's yesterday for jug testing . one at 1800 fps , one at 2300 FPS , and one at 2800 FPS . I used H4895 and the 60% rule to get the 1800 FPS . I used H4895 for the mid load too . I'm saving water jugs now .

Nice. Looking forward to the results Jim.

I think Jake has another one of the ELD X's at 2700'ish coming as well.

that's great , maybe we will get a few different calibers tested . I think ridgerunner is going to test the 7mm's too .

Why do you want to use such heavy bullets in a 7mm-08?

To test them for expansion at longer ranges from a larger rifle at longer range.

Made it out to the range today and shot the 7-08 loaded down 26gr H4895 and 175ABLRs. They chrono'd at 1663fps and shot 1/2" in groups (y). Recoil was easy and they were fun to shoot. The 28 will be out at 1200+ yds at that velocity. I also tried the 195gr Berger but it wasn't stable and I ended up with a keyholed shotgun Pattern. Almost ready for the jugs.
