Dang, felt like a kid on vacation today! Turn a 60 year old jarhead loose with a rifle, a Jeep and a pair of snowshoes... It's always coyote season, and I checked with the Fish & Wildlife folks, my area is still open for cougar hunting. Off I went into the hills for the morning. Here's a few photos to share:

Snowed a little last night, couple of inches. No problem. Underneath that couple of inches of fresh stuff? ICE. Driving was a little dicey...

Bought these Sherpas about 40 years ago in the 1970's while in college. They were the latest & greatest thing in snowshoes, and replaced my wooden 10x56's, which I still have and use occasionally. Sadly, Sherpa went out of business some years ago, and I'm having a hard time keeping the harness and decking in good shape. I did re-lace them about 20 years ago when Sherpa was still in business. They were a great company. I think it's time for a new pair of snowshoes though. The decking on these broke again on me today. I'll see about patching 'em up again, and will relegate them to reserve or light - duty status. Shame.

Happy old Marine with his Glenfield! No, I didn't see a coyote or cougar to throw a bullet at today.

Doe mule deer seemed happy to have some company. Often I'll find quite a few in this area in the winter, but today, I only found her.

Pretty dramatic scenery, with lots of vertical. I use an old, gated-off dirt road to access some great country. Had a juvenile bald eagle soar over me. It was a good morning, and a mighty fine way to get a winter workout!

Guy, very nicely done sir. hope you find that elusive mountain cat

I just made a post on a thread about rifle weight and made reference to you and then saw this. I was or am right. Looks like a lot of fun. Hope you can repair those snowshoes, good luck

Best Regards

Jamila

Excellent account of some great exercise, Guy. Trust you'll cut the tracks on a cat at some point soon. Looks to have been a beautiful day.

Guy, beautiful scenery. I've been stuck in the house for a few days with the crud so I'll just have to be envious of you right now. We have some weather coming in later in the week so I'm guessing you'll be getting some more snow soon.

Awesome pictures Guy. That looks like a ton of fun to me buddy! I'm jealous of being able to take off from your house, 4x4 in your Jeep, hike on snowshoes and the chase mountain lions around. Too darned cool!

I've got to find a mountain lion soon if it's going to happen Scotty. We're almost at our take limit for this particular area. Several have been taken in my county this year.

It is a wonderful place to live. I've got rugged National Forest land on three sides, some within minutes of the house... The Columbia River borders the other side of town. Took me all of 20 minutes to get out into the hills today.

Ya, I like it here.

Guy,

That is some nice looking county. Hope you can get on a big Tom cat.
Take a look at Iverson's for new snow shoes. They are made in snow country and built to last. Mine are 20 plus years old and still going strong.

Went with a set of snowshoes from MSR, built here in Washington.

We get a little snow too. :)

Nice to see those traditional looking snowshoes. I've still got my old, really old, wooden 10x56" snowshoes that I bought used in the 1970's. Use 'em from time to time. I'll have to take a photo of them one of these days. Very useful in deep powder, and really, pretty decent to walk in as they're not all that doggone wide. Just long.

Thanks for the link!

Guy nice pictures and a great day outdoors. I am thoroughly jealous as I cannot get out yet. I had shoulder surgery (torn rotator cuff) and I'm still on the mend. I'd hate to take a bad fall or something and put my hand/arm down to break my fall. Might not be good.

Anyway it's great to see you out enjoying it. I sure like snowshoeing. It's great fun and a great exercise for sure! I have the MSR Lightning Ascent and I sure like the heck out of those things. They have great traction and stability especially in steep country.

I really like they are USA made and as you noted are made in your part of the country.

Guy,

You can get the material to fix your Sherpas at Seattle fabrics. I'll look at my swatches to see if they have that color. Might have to go with black.

Cool! I didn't know that. Thanks. I'd like to fix them up again, they were/are great snowshoes. Mine are just showing their age.

Got out on the new MSR shoes yesterday. VERY GOOD SNOWSHOES! The bindings are great too:

Mary, the GWP pup came along as well. Deepest snow she'd ever been in. Plunged in over her head a time or two and LOVED it!

It is obvious that the pup loved that white stuff. Brings a smile to my face to see the obvious enjoyment.

Guy,

Seattle fabrics has 18oz Vinyl coated Polyester in Tan. It is about 0.019 thick. They also have a really heavy duty version that is 42oz (black only) that is 0.040 thick.
