So I Loaded Up Some .25-284 Tonite...

I decided to go ahead and load up my next batch of ammo...primed my cases, consulted my load plan, and started measuring my charges, yada yada yada. My pace was quite leisurely, why rush? This is supposed to be relaxing.

And then I start seating my 75-grain V-Maxes. The first one didn't feel right as I bottomed out the handle on my Co-Ax. I was loading the same seating depth as last time and hadn't adjusted a thing.

"Hmmm. I don't remember anything like that last time I loaded. What's up with this?"

I seat another one. Same thing. I think to myself that I must have fiddled with the seater die after I loaded the last time...but I sure don't remember doing that. Ehh...what else is new? So then I back the seater body out to reset everything and I get my caliper out. I measure one of the cartridges, and the OAL is all wrong and strangely unfamiliar. Whaaaaaa???

The I notice the necks look really odd, and I can see that the bullets are bulging one side of the neck. Whaaaaaaaa??? I wondered if they would chamber in my rifle. They definitely would NOT.

This is where I reboot my noggin. I don't know if anyone else does this, but sometimes when I find myself confronted with something completely inexplicable I tend to let all conscious thought cease briefly. Kinda like flushing, or clearing RAM for those who engage in geek-speak.

And then it hit me. I had grabbed a box of 75-grain V-Max off the shelf. I mean .257" bullets. My intent was to load some 6mm-284. Hey---brain fart! What can I say?

So shortly thereafter I am out in the driveway looking at the .25-284 round I had just unintentionally loaded, preparing to dismantle them with an impact puller.

"Hmmm. This .25-284 round is kinda sexy. I might just have to start thinking about another rifle!"

The darnedest things can get us to thinking that we need another rifle, no?

RR,

The 25-284 is a very cool round. I had the privledge to shoot one and I got the bug. 8)
No worries, we will help you through this difficult time.

What action are you thinking?
Barrel length, twist, contour?
Stock?

You are going to need a scope too, VX3 4.5-14 would be a dandy.........

Funny how things work, RR. I think I would enjoy the .25-284.

Yeah, I've seen how you guys help!

Oh well...can't say I don't tempt and provoke others to indulge themselves from time to time.

I haven't thought a bit past how potent the cartridge looked, JD. Funny you should mention the 4.5-14x Leupold though...I'll be sending my money away as soon as I get paid Friday to get one from a fellow up in your neck of the woods. Still not sure just exactly how I am going to put it to work, but put it to work I will!

Well DrMike, I am sure you would. Why do you not have one already??

I really like Jim's choice of scopes for that new 25-284 you are building! That will really be sweet. He is a smart man though with classic tastes! Glad you weren't able to chamber and fire one and saw what happened first. Would not have been pretty. You hurt that 6mm of yours and I'd cry clear over here!

Just another reminder to pay attention to details. I have yet to do something like that yet. But there are a couple of things I do at the bench to prevent these things from happening.

1. Only time I have more than one caliber on the bench is taking polished cases out of the tumbler for sorting.
2. Only one set of dies on the table.
3. Only one powder on the bench at a time.
4. Only one bullet on the table at a time.
5. Once I prime I don't stop until all cases are loaded.
6. Once I place a charge in a case I immediately seat a bullet so I don't double charge.

Not to mention that since I've been on this forum and hearing stories like this it makes me more paranoid and I pay more attention to details than in the past. I'm still not as detail oriented as I need to yet but I'm getting there I'm starting to measures each round after I load them. Before long I will be measuring each case before I prime too.

Was it a little difficult to seat those rounds?

RR, so who is building your 25-284? Have you decided on a barrel yet?

LOL! You guys are relentless!

I am glad too David...I'd have no more mystery rifles to figure out and I'd have to buy something else to keep me off the streets and out of trouble, and I'd need an intact body to boot. I'd never fire ammo that had such obvious defects anyway though.

"4. Only one bullet on the table at a time." Yeah, same as powder Jake. I only had one bullet on the bench---the wrong one! Rules are like mechanical safeties...they're very good, but won't necessarily keep you out of trouble if you don't have the brain engaged.

At the risk of coming across as hypocritical, I'll float this idea again: it's when multiple rules are violated that the risks increase exponentially. I've read quite a bit about aircraft accidents (I work in aviation), and it's very common to find out that more than one rule or procedure was violated. Think about safe gun handling and how often you get away with unintentional violation of those rules; you get away with it because you don't commit multiple infractions. Off the soapbox now...

Hey Scotty...I'll need some help choosing a barrel. I don't have any barrel catalogs laying around but I bet you do. Why don't you do a bit of looking around and make a suggestion or two? I'll need help choosing a nice walnut stock, too.

Hey buddy, check this place out...

Not much help on barrels to be honest. All of mine up to this point are factory barrels. I am on the same barrel quest as you buddy!

"The darnedest things can get us to thinking that we need another rifle, no?"
:? Need?
WTH does need have to do with it :p
I'm currently missing a .25 caliber of any kind in my battery, after trading one off.
With having a few 6mm's and a 6.5 mm, the need is surpassed, yet I still feel a want for another .25 cal. of some kind.
The .25-284 would be a good one for sure.
Ahhhh again,,,,,, so many wants, so few dollars.

RR,

Take a look at Hart barrels. They shoot lights out and are a snap to clean.

So what are the details on 25-284. Parent case? MV? How bout a pic? I think about a 25WSM /Pronghorn occasionally. In that ballpark? CL
