I decided to go ahead and load up my next batch of ammo...primed my cases, consulted my load plan, and started measuring my charges, yada yada yada. My pace was quite leisurely, why rush? This is supposed to be relaxing.
And then I start seating my 75-grain V-Maxes. The first one didn't feel right as I bottomed out the handle on my Co-Ax. I was loading the same seating depth as last time and hadn't adjusted a thing.
"Hmmm. I don't remember anything like that last time I loaded. What's up with this?"
I seat another one. Same thing. I think to myself that I must have fiddled with the seater die after I loaded the last time...but I sure don't remember doing that. Ehh...what else is new? So then I back the seater body out to reset everything and I get my caliper out. I measure one of the cartridges, and the OAL is all wrong and strangely unfamiliar. Whaaaaaa???
The I notice the necks look really odd, and I can see that the bullets are bulging one side of the neck. Whaaaaaaaa??? I wondered if they would chamber in my rifle. They definitely would NOT.
This is where I reboot my noggin. I don't know if anyone else does this, but sometimes when I find myself confronted with something completely inexplicable I tend to let all conscious thought cease briefly. Kinda like flushing, or clearing RAM for those who engage in geek-speak.
And then it hit me. I had grabbed a box of 75-grain V-Max off the shelf. I mean .257" bullets. My intent was to load some 6mm-284. Hey---brain fart! What can I say?
So shortly thereafter I am out in the driveway looking at the .25-284 round I had just unintentionally loaded, preparing to dismantle them with an impact puller.
"Hmmm. This .25-284 round is kinda sexy. I might just have to start thinking about another rifle!"
The darnedest things can get us to thinking that we need another rifle, no?
