The hunt was in the Mckenzie unit by Brownsville off of Hwy 228.
It was in deed a nasty day out which made it nice for the deer in rut.My boy was using my Ruger M-77 243 topped w/ Simmons Atec scope.
A 90 gr ballist tip w/40.5 imr 4350 loaded up w/ a .411 moa group
so i new it was dead on.We saw some deer on private property so i new they were up and moving. We parked @ a gate and creeped in and took the road to the left (east).Right away 2 does ran from a clear ccut back to the trees. We lost them , they were gone.We procided down over the clear cut glassing and moving cause we were getting poured on by the rain.As we moved on i happen to look back on a side hill (clear cut) and a HUGE bodied buck w/ a BIG rack was running away from us moving away about 200yards on a dead run and adding distance. My boy was able to get 3 shots off at him off sticks but The buck was heading out 250 -300 yards and moving. He was upset but as i told him you never know where the will be ,you just have to be watching and be ready. We headed back down to the truck And i decided to take the right road heading west. Well 200 yards walking slowly and telling my boy to be watching ,wouldn't you know a buck come walking out of the timber @ 50 yards away on a trail and stood there looking at us(duh). One shot behind the shoulder and you know the rest ,,One happy camper.

Congrats to you and especially your son !!
It's great to see the younger ones out and hunting! With a trophy like that I'm sure he won't remember the poor weather etc, but will be ready to go again next year !!

The bullet did not exit, i've shot many deer w/ the 90 bal tip and no exit , it just flat dropped -em in there tracks. I also have 95 moly coated loaded up but yet to use them .The only reason my 243 is out fo the safe the last 5 seasons is my 30-06 needed a trigger and it sat in the safe. Well Dec 07 i finaly bought a Timney trgger. My 30-06 shots 150 g nos partitions w/ ? g rains IMR 4350 ......
