It has been another great spring. Last year was my best ever and this year I topped it. I made some goals before the season and all were meet but one. Goal 1 was to have fun and be safe, goal 2 was to take a kid hunting, goal 3 to be in on 5 successful hunts and goal 4 was to call one in with a trumpet. Every goal was met except the last one. I had a bird gobble but a hen cut him off as he worked towards me. In total, I hunted the Learn to Hunt and at least one day of every WI season and was part of a successful hunt every season. I saw a total of 7 birds go down plus a few misses. I hunted all or part of 16 days and had birds within 100 yards on 14 of them, this is despite having bronchitis for 2 weeks. I also was able to get a nice bird with my late father-in-laws gun which was very meaningful.

Learn to Hunt and one of my students.

Dad's bird that I called in for him.

My 4th season bird.

My 5th season bird in Zone 1. This was the first time hunting away from my home territory. We had a blast.

My 6th season bird with my father-in-laws BPS.

You did very well, indeed. Congratulations on a great season! Really enjoy reading about your work with newcomers to the sport. (y)

WT, what a great way to start the season and to take along a young person makes it even more special. Thank you so much for the story & photos (y)!
PS. I bit those birds tasted mighty fine.

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks for the replies. I am planning on wrapping a few breast with bacon and putting them in the smoker. I also like to slice the breast thin, coat in seasoned flour and pan fry. That is as good as it gets.

I've never hunted turkey, but I would love to do so. I watched a couple of toms displaying their fowl charms for a flock of four or five hens while staying at my brother's home this past month. The birds were not more than ten yards from the kitchen where I was enjoying a cuppa' joe.

DrMike, if you want to chase birds let me know. You will learn that hens are the devil and steal toms any chance they can.

Looks to be an outstanding season.
I'm happy for you and you have a right to be proud and bask in your success.

That's very generous of you; I'll keep that in mind. We didn't have turkeys in KS when I was a boy. We just spent time with my wife's family in SE KS this past month, and saw at least one turkey that had been smacked by a car. Her brother said they were a real problem for him as a mail carrier. Not the way I remember. OTOH, there were no deer in that area when I grew up there. There are certainly deer there now. SMH.
