Is there a standard distance of bullet jump you use in an untested rifle and bullet which serves as a good starting point?
I've always just went to an OAL and used what shot decent but I would like to start doing some measuring from the ogive to see if I get any improvement.

Most of my stuff is limited by mag length but I typically start at .005" off but most of my stuff usually shoots best from .025" - way the hell off " the lands.

For cup-and-core bullets, I start at 0.010 inches off the lands. For monolithic bullets, I start at 0.100 inches off the lands. For bonded core bullets, anywhere from 0.100 to 0.050 inches off the lands should yield decent accuracy.

Is there some reason for the longer jump on the monolithic other than they shoot better with it?

Allow at least 0.050 inches due to pressure issues with the monolithics.

G'Day Fella's,

Alderman, what I do (if the bullet isn't being crimped etc) on most of my Hunting and Varmint rifles, is to seat any bullet from 0.020" to 0.030" off the lands!
I then start at the Start powder charge, and increase it in either 1/2 or 1 grain increments (depending on case capacity), to see what shoots the best groups!

Hope that helps

Doh!
