steens wilderness adventures

YDog - never used them, but a trip to the Steens is something I've wanted to do for quite a while now. Interesting area. I hear there's some good hunting to be had.

Guy, these guy pack into the Minam and Snake River units I believe. They do hunting trips in the fall, and horse tours/camping trips in the summer. I've looked into using them someday. I don't know anybody that has used them though. I talked with them at the sportsman show in the Tri-Cities last month. They seem like nice guys. I'll look into having them pack me in as I get closer to being serious about hunting in those units.

They've been around a while and have a good rep for doing what they promise. Some of the other outfits that operate in the same area have had a lot of turmoil in ownership and abilty to deliver on contracts. Steens would be the outfit I would use for that area.

Some really big bulls come out of the Minam, pretty easy to draw a tag. Not 45/70 country however.

Yeah, I'm getting pretty close to drawing my Mt. Emily tag so I don't think I'll be going any place else anytime soon.

After I draw the Mt. Emily tag I will be looking at some other units that a guy can draw more regularly. I think it would be fun to do a pack hunt like that every few years. Your not joking about it not being 45-70 country! I'm thinking 338R country! The 45-70 will be great for where we hunt spikes though. Farthest shot to dat in there is 50 yards.

As you know I hunt Mt Emily almost every year, for spikes. Few if any put in for spike hunts as first choice, my goal is to keep hunting, I am too old to draw another branched bull tag there. The upper end of the Minam River, coming in from the south is rumored to have some very large bulls.

Jake, that'll be sweet if you draw a branch anter tag for Mt. Emily. That place certainly holds onto a bunch of elk and there never seems to be a shortage of bulls, and good ones at that! I think the 338 is right at home in that country.

I have a buddy that archery hunts that area, I would say you are hearing correct info.

Scotty, I love it up there. I'm all excited for some spring bear hunting up there. I'm going to start putting the first season spike as my second choice just to get some more time up there if I don't draw my big bull tag.

You, and Bill will have to let me know when your going to be up there. We'll hook up and share a good whiskey drink.

Sounds like a plan to me Jake. I am really looking forward to the Fall, well and the Spring too!
