I am looking to buy a new rifle and the caliber that I have chosen is the 223 remington. The rifle that I am looking at is the stevens model 200. I have shot that same model in the 308 and it was pretty nice, but what are your thoughts on this brand and model of rifle? Thank you

I have one in 7mm-08.
I find myself reaching for it more and more. I shot an antelope with it this year at 304 rads though the right eye with it, Incredibly accurate!

I think they are a great gun in a great value. The not so pretty mold marks on the stock can be sanded down and the stock can be painted however you desire and will be an improvement in looks and wouldn't make me feel bad for doing so because it's not very pretty to begin with. Another plus the stevens has going for it, is despite the cost, it is aluminum pillar bedded and the trigger can be replaced if so desired, still costing much less than say a remington or cz gun which may not be as accurate out of the box.

My buddy had one in 7m-08. It was a shooter. I think it would be a fun gun to spruce up the stock, do the trigger and go hunting.

About how much is the going rate for one of these rifles? Because I found one for 285.54 brand new.

That is a fair price from what I have seen. And with prices going up... My son sold 20 rifles yesterday in 8 hours.

Another question on the 223 rem, I went to alot of sport stores around and I have seen alot of remington VTR tacticle rifles for about 500-650 dollars. Has anyone ever tried these rifles and what did you think of those also?

Group by stevens 200 at 200 yards. Less than 1"

I have one in 22-250 and It shoots into one hole at 100 yds with 60 gr Hornady V-Max bullets. For the money it's hard to beat.

If it is a product of Savage it is good to go I am sure. Nice shooting POP and Greg a one hole at 100yds is nothing to sneeze at for sure. I guess the only thing to do now is buy it.

It is a Savage with a grey stock and no accutrigger.

Well guy's, I have done some figuring and I am going to buy two stevens (223 rem and a 22-250) for even less than what one remington VTR costs. Now I just need to save up and get both of the rifles and then get some loads for the two of them. Thanks for the help everyone. And that is some awsome shooting, both of you!

I bought a Stevens Model 200 in .223 when they first came out. The problem I had with my Stevens was I SOLD IT.

I found instructions on the net on how to tune the trigger. In about half an hour of work I ended up with a nice crisp 2 3/4 pound trigger pull. The bore on mine seemed a little rough on the first cleaning so I coated patches with Flitz Metal Polish and worked each patch end to end in even strokes about 20 times. If memory serves me correctly I used 5 patches coated with Flitz Metal Polish. I then totally cleaned the bore again before shooting it.

Once at the range I did my usual barrel break in procedure shoot one shoot, push 3 patches soaked in shooters choice through the bore followed by 3 dty patches. After 10 rounds of this I went to shooting 3 rounds, push 3 patches soaked in shooters choice through the bore followed by 3 dty patches. i did this 5 times (or shot 15 rounds) I then went to shooting 5 rounds, push 3 patches soaked in shooters choice through the bore followed by 3 dty patches for another 25 rounds, then thoroughly cleaned it again.

The first 10 yards I got it zeroed and shot at 25 yards. AFter that I moved the target to 100 yards. The largest group I fired was 3/4" for 5 shots from the bench. All the while I had the Stevens Model 200 .223 I mainly shot Ultramax Commercial Reloads with 55gr. Pointed Soft Point Bullets. I took a couple Coyotes and a few other varmints with that rifle.

Then one day a high school students dad approached me and asked if I knew anyone that had a .223 for sale as his son wanted a .223 for Hunting Coyotes. Yep you can guess the outcome I sold my Stevens, a decision I still regret.

As noted they are nothing special to look at. The checkering and mold seams on the stock are sharp, but as stated that can be fixed quite easily with some sand paper. All in all I think it is one of the best deals out there considering what a guy gets.

Yes this is a SAVAGE with the old style Savage Trigger and Savage Stock. If I ever buy another Stevens Model 200 I will probably spring for a DuraCoat Camo Job on it.

My wife just bought me a Stevens 200 in 223 for Christmas, with a little prompting. I've been wanting a varmint rifle since I sold my last 22-250. I wanted something I could shoot lots without spending alot, so I went 223. It's almost uncharacterestic of me to go with a slower caliber, but it'll be killing yotes too, so the reduced velocity won't hurt. And brass availibility is great here as most people don't reload 223. Usually there is at least a few hundred peices of brass lying around at the range during the summer.

Cool, I would like to see how it shoots. I love my Ruger Mk II SS in 22-250 and so does Jordan like his and the 22-250 with a 53gr TSX will put down deer.

Lucky man!

She most likely doesn't realize that a Stevens or Savage 223 can also become a 17 rem or 204 in about 2 minutes......

Would be a dandy 17 rem, be a thing of beauty to clean the way a 17 can foul itself up. I'll have to start watching the Pac-Nor ready to ship list.

And yes, I am a lucky man.

There is a 23 caliber minimum in Alberta for deer, so I can't use it legally :( .

I meant a 17 barrel would be easy to clean if you just take it off the receiver to clean it, BTW.

All you need to make it legal is a .473 bolt face, short action caliber barrel, barrel wrench and go/no go gages.
