STW barrel life?

Well yeah! Heck if you guys are going to use 'em like I use my .308 or a .223... then no wonder you're shooting out those 7mm STW barrels!

Quite a cartridge that has always interested me, but I never quite got around to turning one of my 7mm Rem mags into the STW.

FOTIS - that 7mm mag #1 just never produced the accuracy I was seeking, no matter how much fooling around with it I tried. Too bad, 'cause it was a very good looking older Ruger. With the 26" barrel, it seemed natural to consider it for conversion to the STW - but about 1.5 MOA was the best I could wring out of it, and I wanted better.

I'm not going to lie, I build the STW with the hopes of taking all kinds of game with it. But shooting gongs all day has turned out to be way more fun than I ever immagined. I have taken a cow elk with it, and a few yotes, but not near what I had big plans for. Funny how thta works out isn't it

I'm taking my .243 to the range this morning to work with some 105 A-Maxs again. Sould save me a lot of barrel life on my STW. My best 1000 yard group is still with my .243. Can't remember it if was the 105 A-Max, or the 105 NCC. Both shooot very well.

I don't know about the barrel on my STW. Traded a 308 for it from my ex boss.
I've been arguing with it for two years trying to get it to shoot though.
It was a Mdl 70 Walmart special 7Rem Mag that I had reamed to STW.
I've put over 200 rounds through it doing load development work.....
It finally came together yesterday. 160 Partition at 3320 fps and a five round group
I could cover with a nickle at 100 yards.
It won't get shot much now, just at game probably.

That is a SCREAMER of a load Howard. Can't see needing much else there! 3300 with a PT.. That is alot of swat and reach.

Scotty YOU HAVE GOT TO GET SOME WC872 !!!!!
I'm lighting 88 grains of it in the STW

Next Saturday when the season opens at the lease in Mo I am going to be in a quandry.
Do I carry the 264 stoked with 130 ABs or the 7STW to the stand ????????

May just have to buy an extra doe tag.

I bought mine used, so I have no idea as to total round count. I have probably got around 400 or so through it. BUT I have never been happy with the consistency (or lack of) so it will soon have a new barrel on it. I will hopefully get it back shortly after Christmas.

Quick question...

I think the 7mm STW may be my first break from Hornady dies, and I'm thinking Redding.

Any issue using redding dies with the Hornady #5 shellholder?

My model 70 stainless which was rechambered from 7mm Rem to 7mmSTW before I ever shot it back in 1994 has to have seen close to 2000 rounds down the pipe. You can see with the naked eye wear/erosion for the first inch or so of barrel but it will shoot 140 Nosler ballistic tips or 120 grain Barnes TTSX into 3/4'' 3 shot groups at 100 yards. At some point it will get a new pipe spun on but until accuracy falls off we will keep using it as is.
