My neighbor and friend's second son, Benjamin, was old enough this year to participate in the NYS Youth Deer hunt held over Columbus Day weekend. About one hour after sunrise, a spike and a small 8 point came out at about 134 yards and then ran down to about 60-65 yards. The 8 point stopped and turned broadside. Ben shot and had his first deer.

Ben used a Sauer Model 100 XT Classic chambered in 7mm-08. This rifle was purchased specifically by Caleb for his children to start their hunting careers with. To minimize recoil, we use Nosler factory 120 gr. BT ammunition. It has proven to be very effective on deer.

Here is Ben with his older brother, Noah, who has already (in the previous two years) taken 4 deer with this rifle and ammo combination. Noah did not have a shot on a buck during this year's youth hunt.

And of course, here is the photo of Noah helping out his little brother.

Simply an outstanding story. This brought back a flood of memories, going back 60 years. Yes they will remember this day for a long long time.

Congratulations to Benjamin. He did a great job. Caleb is doing it right.
