I have 2 boxes of .284" 162gr HPBT Match bullets that have some tarnish on them. Can I put them in the tumbler and clean them up without any negative effect?

Thanks

Try wiping them down with some brass cleaner. They will clen up nice.

Heath, That would be fine. As a matter of fact, why bothered. It won't affect the accuracy unless you just want a nice looking reload. I believe I have five hundred of the old 162 A-Max that I 've got from a friend, and it's all tarnished. I haven't load any of them yet though.

Thanks guys.

I am thinking about loading some of these babies up for the old 7RM. Any one have any recipes for the 162 and the 7RM? I have 7828, H1000, IMR4350, H4831 and IMR4831.

Sorry, I don't own a 7RM but any of those powder will do.

My standby load for my 700 7 RM was 61g RL22, win case, Fed215, w/162g AMAX. Accuracy is never over .75" and 90% of the time, its .5". Velocity is a bit on the slow side though at 2850-2900fps. Took a nice 4x4 muley couple years back at 790 yards with this combo. Hit him behind the shoulder, a bit low, but he only went 20-30 yards and piled up.

I just finished some more developemnt with the 162g AMAX and IMR4350, IMR7828, H1000 and Retumbo to see if I could hit 3000fps and keep 1/2 MOA.

Initial testing showed IMR4350 at 58g, H1000 at 68g, and Retumbo at 69g. Each of these shot 1/2 MOA at 100 yards the first time out. 4350 and H1000 were clocking 2950fps and Retumbo at 2975fps. So close to my goal of 3000fps. IMR7828 was not as accurate, 3/4 MOA and only 2900fps at 65g or 66g. So I concentrated on IMR4350 since it uses 10g less powder to get the same velocity, and H1000 as I have a lot of it and thats what my 338 EDGE uses.

Loaded up 4 shots each with IMR4350 and H1000 to see how consistent they were and IMR4350 ended up shooting a tad over 1" this time around. H1000 put 3 touching and the 4th opened it up to 5/8". So I think I found my load in H1000, seperate days, both hovering 1/2 MOA at 2950fps. Nice 1K deer and antelope medicine... Makes it nice because now I can buy a 8lb jug of H1000 and use it for both of my LR rigs, 7mm and 338 EDGE. Plus I like the temperature sensitive of the Hodgon powders, I cant say the same for IMR or RL22... This is from a 700 BDL custom deluxe with nothing more then a tirgger job and a Holland QD brake. Very very very accurate rifle for a factory sporter, It will shoot with semi customs...

I am touching the lands, my OAL is 3.440", once again using Win brass and Fed215 primers.

BTW, tarnish bullets dont give up anything in the accuracy department. They just look prettier. I've noticed though the more you handle them, the oils from your fingers will tarnish them. ALso the precipitation from being in the cold or whatever will do it as well. Really has no effect tho.

I second that! I really like the Nosler 2nds! Can't beat them for the money!

I tumbled a few today to see how they would turn out. Turns out the HP is just big enough for some media to get into, should I try to fish it out or leave it be? Will it effect anything?

Thanks

Theory would say that you lose a degree of uniform weight distribution, potentially introducing yaw. In practise, it is not likely to cause a significant problem on hunting ammo.

Thanks for the info 25/06, I will work with the H1000, I was leaning that way.

Dr.Mike, thanks for the help. I tried digging it out with a safety pin and was going no where fast. I emptied the tumbler as it was time for a media change and I am tumbling the bullets by themselves with no media. It's pretty amazing how much crap was in them!
