The 338 Federal?

...yeah, but...

...the smaller case & bigger bullets, both in length & diameter (volume of a cylinder) will use up a higher percentage of the case volume, so it's shorter bullets w/ lower BC's or less powder...

While I never discourage the aquisition of new rifles in any caliber, I would rather have a 308 than a 338 Federal personally. Simply because if I plan to shoot bullets of heavier than 180 grain its because I am going after game which will need more punch to take down and therefore more powder to propel it than the 308 case holds.

Not knocking the 308 or 338 Federal for that matter but in my humble opinion, the 308 is the most bang for the buck in that case. :) I have shot a few elk and Russian hogs with mine and have no complaints. :)

Its realy more about impact velocity than which case a bullet was fired from. 338fed or 338win one has an advatage in range and the ability to handle 225-250gr bullets.

At 250 yards there is not much a 338 cal 210gr pt will not dispatch effectively at the 338feds velocity levels.

Consiter the sorce, I shoot a 358win. A plain jain bolt in 308win with a 21" barrel is a very usefull tool to have in the tool box. If its you first rifle or one of many.

I owned a couple of .308's and for elk hunting they are marginal at 250 yards or so. Plus they can only push a 165 bullet at about the same chrono'ed muzzle velocity as a .338 Federal can push a 200 grain bullet. Give me the 210 Partition at 2600 fps for elk any day. The .308 is a fine deer cartridge though.

I have come to find I have a severe affinity for two things: Rifles (Mainly Model 70's and their clones  ) and the 308 family of rounds. I have a 7mm08 already, and I love the rifle; but I have been reading up on the 338 Federal and it has got me itching for another MRC 1999. What can be said about the 338 Federal? Is it a short-action thumper capable of taking big-game such as bears, elk, and moose? Especially hogs in the thick brush...

The 338 Federal ruined my hunt this past fall. It was about fifteen minutes after first light when this young moose stepped out into a cut block. One shot with a 180 grain Copper Trophy and my moose hunting was ended for the year.

It works as well as my 358. Yeah, I'd use it on moose again.

Oh, yeah, it is a Model 70.

Very Nice little BULL there Dr Mike - Nice M70 there too ! Congrats ! RJ

That should be a dandy rifle for bear. I'm putting new glass on my 338.

What you going to use ? :?: I have Talleys and i think i will mount my 2.5-8 Leupold on it :) RJ

I have a couple of these scopes; they are, indeed, nice glass. I should have the Federal up and kicking bears this spring.

I put the 3-9x42 Kahles back on my .338 Federal. That is a really good scope for that caliber. Plus my Kahles has the TDS reticle which that caliber needs more than say, a .270 Win. I put the 1.5-5x20 Leupold on the 9.3x74R. I also put a Vortex leveling bubble on the scope. I think that a pumpkin-ball-thrower Number One ought to have a leveling device!

I think you summed it up pretty well, Charlie. Two of my Kahles have the TDS reticle, which doesn't hurt a thing on that cartridge.

DrMike, I do not own many short cartridge rifles which are over .25 caliber, except the .338 Federal. The TDS reticle reminds me that I am shooting a rifle that has a different trajectory than a .270/.280/.30-06. Plus it works really well to set the second stadia of the TDS on 200 yard zero. Then the third wire is very close to 300 yards, the 4th stadia is at 375 and the fifth stadia is at 450 yards which is a stretch for this cartridge.

This arrangement works really well for me with the .338 Federal rifle. I am really glad that I have this Kahles scope with the TDS reticle on this rifle. The only other ladder type reticle that I own is the 2-10x40 Minox BDC mounted on my .22 Mag.

What did you do with the 2-8 Zeiss Charlie?

I have several ladder type reticles, and each works well if you take the time to calibrate them. The TDS is as fine as any. I agree with you, Charlie, that it will work well on the 338 Federal.

Scotty, my 2.5-8x32 Zeiss Conquest is my only spare scope now. I have sold all of the various scopes that I had on rimfires and those for backup. This Conquest will not be unemployed for long and I can't replace it. I just bought a 3.5-10x44 Conquest in order to assure that I had two Conquest's going forward that both have been or will be discontinued.

I have no plans to sell the 2.5-8x32 Conquest, I can't replace it.

I wish I'd bought 4 or 5 of the Conquest 4x and 2.5-8 when they were available. I love smaller scopes and these were just fantastic. I'm hoping some more will show up, but I doubt it.

Sorry, Scotty, that scope is too handy to sell! The Zeiss Terra series is going to have a 2-7x32. That should be a good scope for levers and single shot cannons?
