The downside to my last trip to the range

And if it copper fouls that quick all the time (less than 50 rounds fired)...you may want to look into changing bullets.

I know some rifles/bullets do that and people deal with them...I've dealt with a couple too...but there are too many options available to put up with that, IMO.

Yes, I'm having to tap the rod through with a hammer as it's so tight.

Soak it...15 minutes (per Barnes instructions)...run an oiled patch through it...repeat as many times as necessary, until the patch will slide through.

This same size patch would previously slide through the bore with relative ease, right? If not, you need a smaller jag and/or patch. Using a hammer to get a patch through is a bad deal, I "pull" some pretty dang tight patches through, but thats pulling, keeps everything in line (Otis cables)...hammering a rod through is a recipe for disaster.

And I would most certainly switch bullets...if its purely copper that is making it that tight.

The barrel....push a loose patch soaked with CR-10 through the barrel...let the barrel sit for 15 minutes (no longer)...give a few strokes with the brush for the last 1-2 minutes of that 15 minutes...push a snug (not tight) patch through, oil soaked, to remove the CR-10...repeat that whole process as many times as it takes.

Don't leave the CR-10 in there for more than 15 minutes...be sure to get all the CR-10 out and to oil the bore good when you're done.

OK, thanks. I'll clean it again and try your method.

I repeated that just to make sure you saw it...you didn't answer.

I saw it.
Thank you. The bloody thing keeps getting stuck. Using a .257 jag.

I use Bore Tech Eliminator and CU2. Same effect as Montana Extreme with the need for my gas mask.

Agree with RR. Either switch bullets or get some JBs or Iosso and lap that bore. That's rough stuff if you've got that kind of copper fouling. It won't hurt to let that stuff sit and work.

Did a second cleaning tonight and pulled more copper out.
I think I've been too easy on my cleaning as I've been using a nylon brush. It may be that I need to use the slightly harder bronze brush.
After the copper cleaning I attacked it with Hoppe's #9 to get the carbon. It seems the copper removers don't work too good on carbon.

The nylon brush should be fine...but you may want to look into a better copper solvent.
A better copper solvent is on the list for this week.

I use nylon brushes only. You might consider using JB paste, however, to take out the constrictions.

Adding this to the list. [emoji106]
I really appreciate the help here in this forum. Thank you.

Fourth cleaning in progress now.
I've got Wipeout sitting in the barrel. This will be allowed to sit for at least three hours, more likely twenty four. The first round I let it sit for an hour. Using the Accelerator too.

Started working on the .338 this evening.
I am using Wipeout due to liking what I read about it. I'll say this, after all the scrubbing and brushing I did I'm amazed at how much blue color I had on the patches. We'll see how Wipeout works by itself without prior brushing.

Vince, I use Wipeout and Butch's Boreshine along with Nylon brushes on my rifles :) it has always done the job for me .
I started using Butch's Boreshine on the recommendation of DrMike.

Blessings,
Dan
