Little delayed, but here are the pictures. I have the XS Rail with sights inbound, and eventually it will be wearing a VXR 1.25-4.

Nice! Always have liked that stainless/laminate combo.

And a big bore Marlin... Sweet. Enjoy working up loads for that beast, it truly will go mild to wild, all depending on the pounding you want to dish out, or take.

Thanks Guy. I want to run the Speer 300 and 350s in her. They seem like awesome bullets. If anyone has any other bullet recommendations that work awesome in the 45-70, let me know.

You've checked out the .458" bullet tests in our bullet test section?

I'd feel great about stalking any heavy game in North America with the 350 gr Swift Bonded bullet... Wow, what a bullet! But very expensive.

The 350 gr Hornady flat nose is also very good, and I've seen reports that the 350 gr round nose works well, though slower to expand.

Big, heavy cast bullets became a favorite of mine - in particular the 425 gr "Piledriver Junior" from Beartooth bullets. Accurate. Penetration? Simply not an issue. How many buffalo herds do you want to shoot through?

It's easy to get excited about loading for, shooting, and hunting with the big bore Marlins.

Enjoy!

Oh man, she is a beauty. Congratulations big time.
You are going to love the 45-70, you can load it from mild to wild.
I load the 300 gr BST with 59.0 grs H322 for a MV of 2100 fps from my 1895 Guide gun and sub MOA
accuracy. The Remington 405 gr SP with 53.5 grs H322 gets 1847 fps and sub MOA as well.

Keep your eyes open for the discontinued Nosler 300 gr PT's. Pushed with 62.0 grs H322, they move out over 2200 fps and penetrate into tomorrow. More than enough penetration for elk and moose.

Glad you are happy AJ. She was a nice rifle, just one that I did not need.

Between a pair of guide guns, a pair of Marlin 375 Marlins and a 338 Marlin Express, the long bore 45-70 just did not have a home.

JD - I have some 300 gr partitions that I was thinking about giving a twirl in my guide gun, but conceptually they almost seem more at home for the longer barrel. I have a bunch of 350 and 405 gr cast bullets and some 350 gr Hornady jacketed bullets.

I have my guide gun set up for the 405 gr laser cast bullets over a load of RL-7

I gave AJ some 525 gr cast bullets for the MXLR, if someone wants to help reload them for him.

He owes me some bacon for the rifle or maybe a pig hunt!!!!

Very nice AJ! That is a SWEET rifle!

Everyone made great suggestions for the 45-70. Really hard to find a bad bullet for it. Mine shoots them all really well!

I had one in 450 Marlin. Great looking gun but I had to sell it. It was very unwieldy for me with the 24" barrel.

The .458 cal 300 gr PP will shoot very well in the 1895 Guide gun. ;)

Congratulations, AJ; the laminate and stainless makes for a very attractive package. The 45-70 is a thumper.

Thanks all. I am gonna run either Federal blue box or Fusion for now. I gotta move shortly and once I am all settled in and have the man cave established I will be trying my hand at loading and hopefully not blowing anything up...

I dig my XLR 45-70. Almost a twin to yours.

Wow....I actually plan on a big loop lever AND a Leupold. Very nice rig!

AJ,

Let us know when you are ready to start loading. We are all eager to help get you started.

Will do. I am heading up North for a few days to do my interview/check out a place to live. If all goes well, I will be putting the deposit on the place. The best part? It has a den which will be made into the MAN CAVE!

If anyone can locate some RL7 for the Marlin (or any suitable powder) give me a shout. I want to acquire some but am not having any luck.

AJ,

Keep an eye open for H322. Its the only powder I have used in my 45-70. It works so well, I have never bothered to try anything else.

Thanks for the powder recommendations. I will pick some up and hang onto it, as well as some Starline brass.

For shooting this with the XS Sights, I plan on giving her a 50 yard zero, and also seeing what I can do at 100.

Maybe a 100 yard zero, you will only be 1.5" high at 50 yds. with a 300 gr bullet ;)

Another lever option is the DRC loop. Not quite as large as Brian's WWG big loop.
