Here is the rifle I hope to take my elk with this year. I will be carrying my .30-06 as back up but I'll be hunting a lot in dark timber and this little rifle is just begging to be used.

I will be adding this Rice peep sight to the bolt and I do have a new safety on order. This rifle was missing the safety when I purchased it. I've got the load that will hold 2" at 100 for three rounds, hoping this sight will get them a little tighter.

.30-40 Krag loaded with 180 Grain Hornady RN, just the RX for Elk!

Very nice.
I like to see older guns getting used. I have an 8mm Mauser that I have a Basix trigger w/safety to be put on and then I'm ready to also use it in the timber/brush. In the last 5 years our group has taken about 12-13 elk and one was 400+ yds, the rest are 25 - 100yds. These numbers show that you don't need a BIG Mag to take elk under those conditions.

Beautiful rifle. That looks to be just what the Dr. ordered.
Good luck on your elk hunt.

That is just too cool. I really hope you tag an elk with that. It will make a wonderful story to hear how the old performer works.

"Civilize 'em with a Krag"...."that's bully!" At least it will be when you got one on the ground. Had a carbine that would have been a perfect ranch rifle. Too bad the bolt face wont work for a 22 hornet case that would be a fun rebarrel. Can you imagine a "sniper version" of a rifle like that!! Them Krags were cool...have fun! Post the pics CL

What a cool rifle!

Coincidentally I just ran across a lever action Win '95 in ".30 Army" earlier today. Took a lot of willpower to leave it at the gunshop... The ol' .30-40 Krag is a pretty neat cartridge, and you've got one in a great rifle.

Best of luck to you on your hunt!

Great looking rifle. I had a collage professor that took everything from Grizzly, Elk, Deer on down with an original military 30-40 Krag with 180 gr bullets. Put the bullet where it is supposed to go at reasonable range and it will do the job. Good luck and good hunting.

One of the gunsmiths has restored an old Krag 30-40. It is certainly a piece of history the deserves more recognition than it has gotten. I am amazed at what is still available in the real world. Wow, Guy, a Model 95 in .30 Army! That would be quite a find. I understand the need for willpower.

Hey DrMike, enjoy your Elk hunt. Have fun with that rifle.
I have an Savage model 340C not as old as your but fun to shoot.
I use it when it is my turn to be in the bush. I have a 1X6 Scopechief with a post. It is in a 30-30 with a clip. Actually I have 2 clips for it and the second clip has never been used from new. I can't get the age because they did not have serial numbers on it.

Be safe!

Blessings,
Dan

No I can't imagine a Sniper but I can a scout version of this rifle. I think that little rib that the buckhorn sight is on, would be about perfect to moun a Weaver base on. Then I could put a Leupold FXII 2.5X Scout Scope in QRW rings on it.

For years and years the largest elk ever killed was taken with Krag like yours. I believe the record was only bested in the last few years. So, certainly the cartridge is capable! Good luck.

Yep I know it will work, if I do my part. Just thought I'd give the elk a fighting chance this year. I've taken them in the past with a .30-06 and .270 so I thought I'd use a slow mover this year.

That 30-40 will be a cool elk round for this year. That 180 HDY will probably be an awesome match for them elk. Good luck with it, hopefully you get a solid shot at one. Scotty
