In looking at the Brownells catalog I saw some ER Shaw barrels made for the 110 Savage actions that are of a "do it yourself" variety.

My question is this: Both the Marlin XL and XS series rifles, along with the Savages, use a barrel nut retainer. Are they the same thread pattern and, if so, would the barrels interchange?

I e-mailed Shaw to ask but they didn't reply so I thought someone here might have the answer.

Be real careful with that.
As I recall, someone on this forum has an issue with the Savage Shaw barrels. It was the wrong thread, and Shaw gave them bad advice on how to fix it.

Thanks, AS. I e-mailed them about a week ago and they still haven't replied.

Complications arose, though, because I took the rifle to the range on Monday and it shot so good I don't know that I would be willing to rebarrel it now, anyway.

Don't shoot the donor! :)

The golden rule of rifle building!

I bought one of those kits through Brownells and had GREAT results. Mine was a Savage 110 in .270 WCF and I rebarreled to 338-06. It shot wonderfully; everything from 180 NBTs to 250 gr Barnes "O"s & Sierra GKs. Problem is, it was an overly heavy taper.

I sold it and ordered one in a slightly lighter taper in 338-06 AI. Hoping to have it soon!

I know from reading in another forum that the threads are identical to the 110 on the XL-7. There were several posters who'd rebarreled Marlin rifles w/ barrels marketed for the Savage with great results. The difference is the barrel nut. You have to get a special wrench for the Marlin version, but I don't believe they're overly hard to find.

Good luck!

efw, that is PRECISELY what I had in mind to do.

However, I shot a group using 100 gr. Matchkings the other night that was slightly over .21 (if I remember correctly  ) so it'd be hard to disassemble a rifle that shoots like that.

I'm still thinkking about a Savage 110 in long action for a 338-06 I don't NEED but...............

Ron - I surely wouldn't mess with a rifle that can produce a .21" group.

That's match-winning accuracy.
