Top 5 VINTAGE northwoods cartridges

Pre-1914 up here would have been:

44-40
.30-40 Krag
.38-55 WCF
.45-70
.38-40

Note, almost all are Winchester rounds, all still carry BP designations. The .30-30 might come into play there, but this was poor lumberjack and miner country. Most of the above rifles would have been purchased secondhand and the 94 Win would be a fancy gun back then. Don't see many 94s in the old pictures until the 1920's.

Yep!.

I still wish for a Savage M1899 with octagon barrel, knifeblade frontsight in .38-55, 303Savage , 25-35WCF or .32-40.(in that order).

Not so much northwoods but more like cedar trees, waist high chapparel and timber of southern Idaho. Back in the old days when I was young. Mid 70's. Our hunting party went like this:

Grandpa 30-06 Win Mod 70
Uncle .300 Sav Sav 99
Uncle 7mm Mauser Reworked Mauser
Dad .30-30 Win mod 94
Me .308 Sav 99

The most sucessful were Uncle's Sav 99 and Dad's 30-30
Those were good times.

I'd somehow feel a little better if the term "vintage" was used to describe something before the Great Depression

Most of the cartridges mentioned were around before the depression. With the exception of the .444 and the .308.
