So, Guys 257 Wby project has me thinking about the "next" alteration for my FN mauser. Originally it had a low swing safety on the left side of the shroud. Worked but not very handy. I asked a smith to switch it to the right side last year and I am really unhappy with that. The "new" safety swings too high and runs into my scope. The finish dosent match and it looks like the wrong part. Dont know why that was so tough to find a lower one. I expressed my displeasure and he says "well I should be getting some mauser parts in... maybe i can do a Winchester style on for you with a different shroud". Well, I was some PO'd cause he just messed up my beloved 250, so I told him I'd think about it. Im sure he wont do it for free. So here's the question. do I go back and see what he can do in a winchester style wing safety? Will a different shroud be an obvious "wrong part" on my otherwise very nice FN? Also, the bolt has been fit for 2 different safeties already. Can it stand another notch for the wing safety? The last question. I have alway held on to the shroud safety because i like the looks and think a trigger safety on mauser is "wrong" BUT a Timmney would give me a better trigger (although the current one has one screw for pull adjustment there is still a lot of creep) and a safety I could work. What would you do? Keep in mind that this was a budget minded project that has developed into a sentmental attachment, but money is still tight. The budget is under $100, Which the smith might do a winchester style for.
All that said If money were no issue a Savage American Classic in 250-3000 would have everything but the sentmental value, much Like Guy's Dad's 257.....
What to do?
