Twist for a 6.5 Barrel

Polaris, exactly sir

I believe if you look at the Speer 14 manual it will show the SCA at 58000 which is more in line with European thinking/standards. I believe all Swedish Mausers made in Europe are tested with one round at 65992.

Earle, I am not disagreeing or arguing with those who want more but I am saying the Swede, as is, is a pretty sweet caliber and IMHO could dispatch all but the big bears in the Colonies, with the proper bullet, of course and I have personally found that bullet to be the 156 Norma Oryx. But there are so many premium bullets made these days, I am sure several others would work for you. You, have far more knowledge than I, as does everyone else here, but since I am fond of the Swede, I thought I would respond. Remember my opinion and a nickel will buy you absolutely nothing

Best Regards

Jamila

The Winchesters were advertised as 1.7825" or some such twist. I haven't found a bullet yet that hasn't shot well.

Jamila,
I would certainly not compare your advice with what can be purchased these days with a nickel! Over the years your posts have always proved to be informative and interesting to me. I agree with you whole heartedly, that with these modern powders, the Swedes case is big enough to push modern bullets up to almost 270 sorta velocitys.
Scotty is working on some of his RL26 in his Swede and will be reporting in shortly on what the numbers say.
I am certain the Swede will do everything I would ever want to do.
The new Nosler 143LR bullet has me pretty interested with a BC over .700 seams like a fantastic set up to me
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the now olde cartridge!
Cheers
Earle

That's what I recorded for speeds today from the Swede. I have some room to grow with the 130's. No flat primers or anything. Plan on pushing them a little more.

That's good speed for the 6.5x55 especially the heavy Mega bullet, 2650 is excellent speed. Kind of surprised the AccuBond was faster than the Swift Scirocco, I experienced the opposite in my 264 WM. Just shows every cartridge or gun reacts differently.

2880fps with a 139 gr Scenar. Not too shabby.
just don't use them on deer, they do horribly

Scotty, get back into your laboratory, lets see those 130gr ABs up over 3k!

Earle, You'll like the Tikka if you've ordered it. They are a light quick handling gun. Both I have are sub .5" shooters without much effort. They have great easily adjustable triggers. I almost bought a sporterized M96 for my first deer gun and still regret it. Eventually, I'll get another Tikka in 6.5x55. It's a classic cartridge, the European equivalent of our 30-06. In a modern action with modern powders, it's not far enough behind the other 6.5's in my mind to make a difference. Besides, you already know the 6.5 hits above it's weight class.

The only negatives I have on the Tikka is the recoil pads are too hard and the recoil lug is goofy. The pads are easily replaced with a Limb saver. The removable recoil lug supplied with my guns is aluminum. They are easily replaced with a stainless steel one for $30. It's something I should do in my '06, but don't know if I will in my 308. Enjoy it and let us know how it shoots.

Have not ordered it yet Bret as looks like the income tax is a bit more than we hoped for ..................
But will get around to it ! Not sure about that plastic trigger guard, so may need to upgrade that at some point but everything else looks great. The 6.5 is the way to go bullet wise, now just waiting to see what Scotty can squeeze outta them ! He is the top dog at wringing out ever last drop from em...................lol

G'Day Fella's,

Here is an image of some of the component parts for my 6.5 Rem Mag.
DSCN1429.JPG,
I'm just working on either a HTS stock or one of the New Zealand made, Carbon Fiber stocks (SG Gunstocks or Senator Stocks).......

Doh!

Thanks Scotty,
I think I have already abandoned the 6.5x06 idea as it is not going to be anywhere near as cost effective as just grabing a Tikka that already has the 8 twist barrel and resale value is going to hold its own a lot better than a made up gun usually does. If the RL26 can get me 2900fps from a Swede out of a 22.5" tube , that is any amount for us, and I could then stabilize the long bullets correctly! Any one that is following this thread that knows anything "bad" about a T3 Lite I am all ears as I am probably going to be ordering one very shortly ???? I would have probably looked at a M70FW as I have a thing for them, but again ..........wrong twist .

Earle,

The Factory FW were 1-8" saw one on GB the other day. 130's I was up around 2880 with IMR 4350 no pressure so 2900 is easily attainable. I just kinda got sidetracked with that one, and haven't got back to it.

Thanks for posting that Jake, cant believe what those are bringing! Wow!
Polaris, that CZ is a good looking gun in all ways, very nice also.

I am trying to develop a process for steel bedding Mausers so stocks are interchangeable.
I got up to 12 Mausers bedded and I started to have to barrel actions.

I would like to say that I barrelled some action with 6.5 barrels this week, but my 260 Manson rearm and my 6.5-06 Clymer reamers have 0.255" pilots.

The Pac Nor 6.5 10" blank here is 0.254" go 0.255" no go.
The Berga 6.5 8" blank here is 0.253" go, 0.254" no go.

So I am dead in the water until I get more barrels or reamers with 6.5.

I did manage to put a Krieger 14" twist barrel in 6mmBR on a 1903 Turk Mausers this week.
