Young Jacob (age 13 in his second year of hunting) was sitting in a tree stand with his dad (Gary) on the morning of November 18th, Open Day of South Dakota's East River Deer Season. They heard something coming down the trail and Gary instructed young Jacob to get his .243 ready.

No it was not a Deer coming down the trail, but rather a Coyote emerged 15 yards from young Jacob's stand. What made this unusual was the Coyote had a dead Rooster Pheasant in it's mouth.

Young Jacob with the wherewithall of a verteran hunter placed a single bullet from his .243 into the Coyote. Nope this Coyote won't be killing or eating any more Pheasants. The Coyote was taken to the local taxidermist with the Pheasant still in it's mouth. Now this Coyote had such a death grip on this Pheasant that the taxidermist had to break the Coyotes jaw to remove the Pheasant.

Yep they are having a full body mount of the Coyote done with the Pheasant in it's mouth just like when young Jacob shot it.

My congratulations go out to young Jacob for collecting a trophy that most of us will never have the opportunity to harvest (or even see for that matter).

Thanks for reading.

A few minutes after young Jacob took the Coyote with the Pheasant in it's mouth Jacob's dad got a nice Buck out of the same stand.

Well not to be outdone young Jacob wanted a Deer bigger than Dads. Well the afternoon after Thanksgiving Day young Jacob and his dad were back out hunting again, but in a different location. According to Jacob's dad they were watching a couple of nice does feeding out into a meadow. Gary told me he kept telling Jacob to take one of the Does, but Jacob wanted to hold out for a Buck.

They watched the Does for a few minutes and all of a sudden a Buck emerged from cover and fed out onto the meadow. Well young Jacob (a really cool customer for his young age) took carefull aim and placed a single bullet from his .243 into a dandy Buck at between 300 - 350 yards.

I am not sure the smile will ever leave young Jacob's face. This young man is having quite a fall and has collected a couple of dandy trophys. Again my congratulations go out to young Jacob.

Yep the Buck is also at the taxidermists. In talking with Jacob's mom she told me she hopes hunting season is over soon for this year as this is getting expensive, and if Jacob's keeps going like he is they'll have to add on to their new home for Jacob's trophys. I am betting that Mom and Dad will keep going to the taxidermist as long as young Jacob brings home more trophys.

Thanks for reading.

That would truly be a great trophy, congrats to the young boy. Probly never get another one like it! That is also a jim dandy whitetail there. Congrats on that one to! Sounds like that .243 is doing him nicely. What bullet is he using at the moment out of curiousity?

I never did find out what bullet he was using. I do not think his dad reloads so am thinking it was factory ammo. Yep Jacob is having a heck of a season.
