NICE! Way to go Jeff! Awesome, you are already putting the slay on them dogs! Very cool.. Pretty jealous of you getting some coyote time!

That's smoking them, Jeff. Great shooting. Give us a blow-by-blow to excite the crowd.

i went out last friday night for a bit just before dark behind my place. i set up the foxpro praire blaster over looking this huge bowl near the area where the water tanks are for the cows. i usually start with a lone female howl this is a non agrresive howl "i have found that using an aggressive vocalization howl seems to do more harm than good when your dealing with pups at this age, the parents tend to shy from possible confrontation when there are little ones around this is not proven science just my observations". first set no response waited about twenty minutes and repeated first calling sequence, as soon as i call i am on the binoculars scanning for movement, magpies are also a great indicator to coyote movements. finally after about twenty more minutes i caught him coming across an opening in the sage brush, not really coming to the call with enthusiasm but curious, this is when i load the baby conttontail sound byte and wait. alot of times when they are coming in sluggishly initial reaction is to over call them, been there a million times. i will wait for them to head away from me or stop and sit before i make another call to them "my thought is they know exactly where the sound is coming from and if there interested they will show up, and palying the same thing when they cant see another coyote will only confirm there suspicion. finally as the usually do when skeptical he sits down and is looking around. i wait a bit and hit the baby cottontail on medium volume this is when he goes from skeptic to full blown interested he comes into 100 yards and i shoot him after stopping him.

second set across the road similar setup " i usually wait at least ten minutes from the time i sit down to when i hit the caller" i hit the same lone female howl and all hell breaks loose i have a pack with pups sound off about 200 yards west of my position another group to the east at the same distance and two loners north of me. the yipping goes on for a couple of minutes and i call again during all of this, then everything gets quiet all at once this usually means there on the move. i wait about five minutes and coyotes start pouring in from all sides about 150 yards from me. an adult and five pups come in straight in front of me and i shoot it then there are coyotes running everywhere the pups are confused so i take advantage of there pause and shoot another one next to the adult and see one more running up the hill to the east of me and shoot it. i am not a big fan of shooting coyotes this early because when i look at one i see a walking twenty dollar bill. all in all the numbers are heavy and the pups are healthy looks like it will be a good year. these were shot with a 223 with a 75 grain amax all coyotes were dead on impact.

thanks scott love the coyote hunting, if i had to pick one animal to hunt and only one it would be the coyote hands down. elk deer antelope dont get to me like a coyote does weird huh?

Great account of an excellent hunt. It does get my blood pumping; I was right there with you as the coyotes came in, Jeff.

If you come through to hunt in wyoming I will put you there next to me Mike, beauty thing about Montana you don't need a license for a coyote, anyone from anywhere "yes even Canada " can shoot them legally without any paperwork as long as your not on state land.

You definitely have me thinking. I'll have to cogitate on this for sure.

Jeff,

Good shooting buddy! It would be cool to get in on a set like that one. Maybe get a hunt in when we all get together in October.

Jeff,

Way to go!
You put the smack on those song dogs.

That's awesome work. I'm waiting on my songdogs. I can 7-8 of them hanging around. Hopefully they will continue to hang around as I keep feeding them rabbits although I'm finally getting a handle on them. It's awefully hard to pass them dogs up when they appear broadside at 100 yard and you got the rifle with one in the chamber. Saw a big 30" mulie the other night too. I didn't get a real good view but he was wider than his ears.

I can 7-8 of them hanging around.

How do they taste, Jake? Can't say that I ever tried canning song dogs.

Hey, that one was too good to pass up.

Actually there not to bad if you put them in a crock pot for a few hours and hit them with ranch.

Jeff, what does taste bad with Ranch? I would dip elk hooves in ranch!

Ewwww! This from a guy that carries fish in the pockets of his buckskin pants.

Hey, you gotta live on the wild side some Mike. Can't run right down the middle of the road all the time!

Simple Scotty old crow whisky and duck. those don't taste good with ranch. honestly Scott after eleven years of sobriety. I think I would still take the old crow and ranch.
