USRAC, Model 70 Glass Bedding

Thanks guys, I really like the upgraded wood with the (Composite) matte finished metal work in a hunting rifle. The new Model 70, Super Grades are really nice but have metal that is too shiny for my tastes in a hunting rifle. The Williams bottom metal is also matte finish and matches the rest of the rifle.

This is a very accurate Model 70, .30-06 that I have not hunted much with in the 14 years that I have owned it. Maybe now that it looks so much better, I will use it more for hunting. I have killed one elk and a couple deer with it. However, I am really happy with how it turned out with the new wood.

Charlie, if you get too bored with it, I will send you an FFL and field test it for you. That is one classy looking 30-06. Scotty

Scotty. don't hold your breath? (LOL). I got the one piece bottom metal and put that in today. Everything but the magazine spring which was too wide and I had to file. The wood is a little proud to the bottom metal but it is made by Williams, not Winchester. Still looks a lot better and all went together finally.

Thanks, Fotis. It is Scotty. Williams does a great job with the fit and finish on the bottom metal. It is nicely finished matte blue, just like the rest of the rifle and fits the stock with a line fit all around. The high polish bottom metal is $80 more than the matte finished metal but I like the matte better anyway. With the stock and the bottom metal added to the original cost of the rifle, I am into as much as much as a new Model 70 but it looks like a new rifle and I am happy with it now.

Now I have an extra set of Model 70, 2-piece matte bottom metal but I like having extra Winchester parts on hand anyhow, just in case. I do not know what I want to do with the old Tupperware, Winchester stock. I guess that I will hang unto it for awhile at least.

Charlie

Very nice wood, looks clean and crisp. It does look like a new rifle.

I am learning as you go, keep the pictures coming. !

You can't beat Williams bottom metal. So your new stock is a recent one from FN? I had to whittle on mine to get the Williams to fit. I thought I could whittle, accra gel is a life saver.

The Grade II stock into which I installed the Williams bottom metal was a new manufacture Browning (Winchester) stock and the floorplate assembly went right into the mortise in the stock (see photo). It fit a little tight but went together fine and all that I had to do was shave the side of the magazine follower spring a little bit on each side.

Very nice Charlie! That bottom metal looks great. What a nice 30-06! Scotty

IMHO, I think that Winchester has improved the Model 70 by going with the slightly more wood thickness in the stock magazine area and one piece metal floorplate. This stock is not as trim as my custom, Super Grade, Pre-64 but it is a little more robust with the extra wood, which should make it a more stable shooting platform. The bottom metal is certainly very clean looking and much stiffer being one piece and being steel.

This has always been a very accurate rifle, despite the flimsy, original stock design. I hope that is still the case as this rifle has often shot 3-shot, <1/4 inch groups for me. I have some targets put away somewhere, shot at 200 yards that are <1/2 inch for 3-shots. I started doing home infusion of my IGG (immune drugs) in the wall of my stomach today and did not get to the range because I alsways feel crappy on Fridays when I have to do a one-hour, 3- needle infusion. Maybe tomorrow.

Scotty, you have gotten good intitial accuracy with the new HS Precision stock that you mounted on your .388 WM, haven't you? If I remember, you glass bedded that stock in the magazine area to use two-piece bottom metal?

Charlie I went with a B&C Medalist on the M70 338. I didn't glass anything yet. The rifle is shooting lights out as it with just the bedding block. I did have to use a stainless washer in the front and middle screws in order to make the two piece metal fit. Eventually I will glass them in to make them permanent, but being stainless I'm not overly stressed about it. They are held firmly in place and the rifle is shooting lights out now.

I hope you feel better soon buddy. I can only imagine what a hardship the drugs are on you when you would really rather be shooting! Can't wait to hear about that 30-06. It looks too nice to not shoot excellent! Scotty

Scotty, I sent you a PM about a spacer for your stock.

Doing this at home still beats spending 5 hours in the hospital every three weeks (losing a day) and feeling lousy for two. This is easier and done at home, no muss, no fuss. Plus, I have not had TB or pneumonia since I started this a year ago. So the benefit is worth the trauma.

Without a doubt Charlie. Glad it is making your life easier. Plus you get some more time to load and shoot not having to drive to the hospital! Hope your able to get out soon. Looking forward to seeing what your 30-06 does. It might make me want one though! Scotty

Thanks guys, it was not that much work. The hardest part was finding the stock.

I like that bottom metal with the floor plate release inside the trigger guard. They didn't make that one for the Winny when I bought mine. Looks really cool.

Good job fixing 'er up.
