Va Deer Hunt

Hopefully the boy gets to eat some of his take. He is wrestling right now, so he is watching his weight! I guess I could always tell him how good it tastes. Scotty

Absolutely, Scotty! It always helps when others tell us how good our game tastes. Be a real pal and tell your son how good his deer tastes, promising all the while that you hope you will be able to save some for when he finishes wrestling.

I think it would be very rude of you to not tell your son how well his deer tastes, your much too kind of a father to do any less.

Kinda late to the party but i will share my part of the hunt. Scotty picked a great time to bring Brandon and the guys down since it was a doe day. Basically you could shoot anything that the dogs ran in front of you. We pulled a great stand line that has always produced kills for my friends and myself. I got everybody on a stand and dropped back to a spot that used to be a hardwood bottom but had been clear cut on one side. No big deal since I told Scotty my goal was getting Brandon a shot at his first deer. I found one ok tree to put my climber on and could only go up about 10'. It was one small tree!

It was slow for a good part of the morning with the dogs staying of the other side of the 700 acres we had picked to hunt. Late morning the dogs started to work our side of the block. That's when Scotty and Brandon started a firefight with some does! I was 200-225 yards away and it sounded like a whole lot of fun. They did save a few for everybody else and I had a few run through the thick side. One deer split off and started to run right at me at about 75 yards. I had to give him a bleat call to make him stop for a shot. Well it worked and a 300 grain Nosler BT hit frontal chest area. That made the deer stand up on his back legs and he went less than 5 yards. The 300gr BT put a hole the size of a golf ball in his chest.

I was lucky enough to find the bullet when we're skinning our kills for the day. The BT went in the chest and was found in the hindquarter. It went from 300gr down to 183.7gr and held together fairly well for shot placement and going 2460fps out of my 45-70.

We had a great saturday hunting together and I hope we can do it again. Here is a pic of some of the guys and gals from the club.

Brian -
that is one heck of an entry hole!! No wonder it stood that deer up on it's hind legs...i'm surprised it didn't go backwards. You might as well send Jim the rest of the 300 grain partitions...doesn't look like you need them :p

Thanks Joel!

Nicely done Brian. The 300 gr BST is impressive.

Super report, Brian. That does look like a great group of guys and gals. It surely was productive for you. Congratulations.

That was some fast action. Up here we sit......and sit......and wait.......and wait. Can make for long, but enjoyable, days. But I can imagine the thrill of hearing the dogs bay and figuring it will be any moment now. Well done.

Thanks guys. I didn't know what would happen with the 300 BST when pushed to the upper limits of the 45-70. Looks like it does just fine but I would like to take a broadside shot next. Entrance and exit hole behind the shoulder would be interesting. I like how the 300 BST shoots in my rifle but I will keep the Partitions for the "big stuff". The 300gr Partition shoots same POI as the BSTs and the 300gr Speers also. Another reason why I like my 1895 so much. The 300RUM and the Super Black Eagle II stay in the truck more now.

Hunting with dogs is how I started just about thirty years ago. But with loss of some hunting land, more people moving out to the "country", and the cost of keeping 50 dogs it will be tough to continue to hunt this way.

Great story, pics and action! Sounds like a memorable trip for you two. Sounds like your son has good hand-eye coordination and a good sense to finish off that doe quickly.

Good to hear that you took your BLR out and it performed so well. We had rain on Tues of the PA season and I wanted to use my .270 with the Elite 4200 scope because of the Rainguard feature. It was hard for me to leave the BLR in the camp rack. The Rainguard does work wonders tho.

Grats again.

Hey, Congrats to you and your son Scotty. Sounds like a great action pack hunt. Thanks for sharing.

Great report. Congratulations to your son. I love dog hunts. I grew up in western VA where we aren't allowed to run deer with dogs. Moved to Richmond in 1982 and now dog hunt 4-5 times a year. 00 Buckshot with a 12 gauge and shooting running deer 35 yards and under is like having a Gatling Gun in your hands. Nothing escapes.

Scotty,
That was an impressive write up on the Hunt. You guys sure cleaned house on killing Doe. I loved the description from your buddy about the Fire Fight broke out!! Hey you represented the 35 caliber family well my friend, once again!

Don

Thanks Don, it is always a pleasure to carry the 358. I really planned on hunting more with the 45-70 this year, but I changed it up a little, and haven't had time to reverify zeros yet. No matter, I love hunting with the 358 and 225 PT. It is an excellent combo for bashing deer up close and personal. I won't say you don't have to worry about shot angles, but it will drive very deep and I have yet to find a bullet in any deer, from any angle shot. Scotty

I hunt in Goochland County 2-3 times a week, Bedford County where I grew up 4-5 times a season, and Bath County as often as I can, usually 4-5 times a season. I love deer hunting. Never get tired of sunrises and sunsets and all the critters that move at those times.

Goochland is a great place for deer and goose hunting. I hunt in Nottoway and try to get Scotty down here when he can get a kitchen pass

Scotty,
I hear ya buddy, anything in 225 grains works for me with a .358 cal. I had a nice 6pt. in the Whelen sights last Sunday in the pouring rain, broadside at 90yds and was starting to apply pressure to the trigger but realized he was not up to Hunt Club standards where I am a member. They must be 4pts one side or 16" outside spread. This buck was about 14", rack inside ears. Only shot opportunity I've had so far. Let him walk to grow a little more. Called him into my doe in heat wafers, he walked right up and sniffed it. 8) It was real close to lights out for him!!
